Candidates - Things To Be Aware Of When Using A Recruitment Agency

It's not about applying to other Agencys and other jobs.
It is about not registering with any agencies .. which is the OP's original post .. 'they will stab you in the back'
I think we have wires crossed here?0 -
I'm afraid I still do not understand why this information needs to be given to a consultant BEFORE a job offer has been made?
Assuming it is on file, how can you ensure that someone else with access to the paperwork doesn't contact the currrent employer in error?
Accidents do happen, unfortunately.
Feel your missing the point a little now or we have wires crossed.
I do not request a referee from your current position & I don't need it - I am only interested in previous positions where you have already left.
In the 4/5 years that I have been with my current employer, I've never seen one of our Consultants contact someones current employer and put their position at risk.
Anyone with half a brain can read someones CV, read the main interview notes and then work out if they are still employed.
Apologies if the above comes across as over the top but keen to make the point as clearly as possible.0 -

Please believe me this is how most Recruitment Consultants work ..0 -

We do have our wires crossed.
Lily's post isn't suggesting not registering with agencies; she is suggesting thinking carefully about the information consultants are given about other jobs the candidate may have applied for (or in her case, been offered).
If I've applied for 2 jobs, one with agency A and the other with agency B, I do not see why I need to tell agency A the name of the company agency B are dealing with for me and vice versa.
If you think about it, when candidates tell other agents about jobs they are being put forward for with your agency, that will surely create more competition for you as well as the candidate? My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

I worked in a fairly senior management role for a lot of years. We had an HR department who handled recruitment in the initial stages. At least twice I was contacted by agents, using my name and direct line, asking me to consider using their agency should I have any future need to fill roles in specific categories.
On both occasions a member of my team resigned shortly afterwards and I was later approached for references for them.
That should not happen, but it did, and it still does.
That was how I learned never to give the specifics of my most recent reference until AFTER I have the new job offer in writing.
You don't have to request a reference to cause damage. You just have to make an innocent sounding call to the wrong person. My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

No Sorry .. Lily originally posted that she already had a job offer with company 1 .. she witheld replying until she had a second interview with company 2 through the agency.
In the same original post she said she contacted her consultant AFTER the 2nd interview and that is when he apparently got in touch with company 1 offering other candidates for the job she had already accepted. From her replies to my questions this is when the Consultant said a decision has not yet been made and when he made the call to the companay she had already accepted the job with? Or she accepted just after a 'friend' advised her the Consultant had been in contact with them
Lily originally said she contacted her Consultant that afternoon .. after the 2nd interview.. to tell him she needed a response that day as she had had a job offer from Company 1
She then after a few questions came back and told us .. no she had actually contacted her Consultant before her 2nd interview for the job introduced through the agency to tell him/her that she already had a job offer for a position she had sourced herself and needed a decision that day.
I still think she stamped her foot (sorry Lily) told him she needed a decision and after nothing was forthcoming told him straight .. I have an offer with Company 1 named ** and if Company 2 don,t give me an answer today then forget it and it backfired ..0 -
My agent called me today, have interview on Wednesday slim chance of getting the job but £250 per day has motivated me to go for it.......0

It's the same old record all the time now Cavework..........
Whatever happened, oh by the way I believe The OP's version, I have never seen any posts from you condemning the dirty underhand tactics from that particular RC. He or she did their very best to take the job that was offered away from her. That was completely indefensible behaviour.0 -

In all honesty, whether or not Lily stamped her foot is irrelevent Cavework.
The consultant tried to undermine the job Lily had sourced herself. That was wrong no matter what the circumstances.
I personally do not think Lily stamped her foot. She warned the consultant BEFORE 2nd interview that she had been made an offer by another company. The consultant told her there were only 2 candidates for the position he was handling so a fast decision was quite likely, and it was only AFTER the second interview, when asking if a decision had been made, that she told the consultant the name of the company who had already offered her a job. It was at that point the consultant tried to pull a fast one. If she hadn't mentioned the name of the company the consultant could not have done that.
No matter how you look at it, that was a nasty thing to do to someone. My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead
