Help... Please!!

:(

Our boiler has stopped working :(

The pilot light goes out after about 5 seconds.. and there is now a small leak from ther bottom of the boiler..

I am fairly confident that it is the condensation pipe that has frozen outside..

My problem is.. after hours of trying I am struggling to defrost it...!

Any ideas on the best way to do this..? apart from the usual hairdryer and hot water.. :(

Thank you

Do you have access to the condensation pipe when it comes out of the boiler inside the house?

It's a bit drastic, but if so you could cut it and lash something up to direct it to a bucket? You'll need to empty it frequently - we're running to a bucket at the moment (because we haven't finished our drainage work yet) and empty once a day. Then work out a better solution later so it doesn't freeze again.
  • Thank you... I was considering this..

The pipe isnt very long outside.. and after pouring lots and lots of hot water over it im not sure how it could be still frozen?! Yet.. im pretty certain that this is the problem after reading of other people having the same problem/symptoms.

when this happened to ours, we cut it and taped a wider pipe over it to direct the drips. its never frozen since as the pipe is too wide to get blocked with ice. (it seemed to freeze quite low down the pipe so we didnt have to cut too much off it.

It always helps us to help you if you tell us the make and model of the boiler in question.

Lag the pipe outside - cheap to do.
Not so cheap a fix ... I know BG now can fit a device which senses low temp and automatically heats up the condensation pipe via a wire.
