I really, really hate being limited to playing music I have bought on one particular device. I've paid for it, it's mine, and I want to play it on every device I have rather than buy a cd for the car, a version for the ipod and a version for the stereo.

    Good on DVD John!

El reg ran it earlier in the month http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/02/dvd_jon_apple_fairplay/ and i suspect people will use it to make non-iTunes bought DRM'd stuff iPod compatable.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

Yeah DRM sucks. As I always say, buy the CD and rip it. Then do what you want with the MP3.

In theory this is illegal. You will find a similar warning on pretty much all CD's:
WARNING: Unauthorised reproduction of this recording is prohibited by Federal law and subject to criminal prosecution.

Not that anyone will ever convict you for doing so, but technically it's still breaking the law.

    DRM is ridiculous.

It'll really catch up with people in the years to come. People often praise iTunes, but I think it's very short sighted.

Devices, hardware etc... is becoming more interoperable and people will want to be able to play their music on a number of devices, but of course they won't.

Stick with cd's or find a site that does DRM-less music.

I also like to promote Ogg Vorbis. Not as well supported as mp3, but completely free and offers better quality, or at least from any ABX tests I've seen.

After yet another 'discussion' about this last year, I emailed FACT to ask them about copying my cds.
The response was that as long as the copies I made were for personal consumption, and not be be passed to other people or organisations, whether I charged a fee or not, and not for public broadcast, then they had no problem with it.
    In short:
If you're ripping for your home mp3 collection or making a copy of your cd to play in the car...then that's fine. If you make a copy for a friend/neighbour/partner then you're breaching copyright.

Cheers BB - I have heard fairly recently that personal use/backup was still not a valid reason. but very interesting that FACT told you this.

I shall have to report that back to my legal eagle friends & get their opinion on it.

One minor point is that the statement above quotes 'Federal Law' which is USA only. But apart from that, it is correct that under UK law it is not actually legal to rip CDs to another media.
