Cranial osteopathy-any good for glue ear??

Hi,
My little one has just been told she needs gromets. I have been reading that cranial osteopathy is meant to help....any thoughts/experiences in this would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

  • The fact that early contact with other children increases the risk of OME and that children attending day care with four or more other children remain at an increased risk of OME at least until 31/2 years. implies that rather than a structual defect in the skull, as a result of birth complications, infection from others is the cause.
I haven't been able to find any research showing that crancial osteopathy is likely to help.

For medical advice a good site to look at is Best Treatments Glue Ear

This research shows that recurrance is more likely in children where the immune status is low. It follows that improving immune status may be a way to clear the problem up.This shows how healthier diet may be a way forward and this Epidemic Influenca reminds us of the importance of vitamin d3 status in enhancing immunity.

The information that food allergy may be a factor is also supported by Research

  • Not medical advice, but i suffered with ongoing glue ear/ear infections as a child and went down the grommets and tonsilectomy and adenoidectomy route. While this did help i found that omitting dairy products improved the problem greatly. Even now as an adult, i find i get a build up and go "deaf" if i overdo the dairy side of things, which improves after a couple of weeks dairy free.

i have found my daughter responds in the same way...

Might just be someting to think about. I know there is lots of supporting research but cant name any at the mo, its a long time since i read it.

    I would try it.

I took my baby for c-o when he was 2 weeks old. He had bad colic. In the first session he went from being a wee ball of rage to a chilled out 'squashed frog'. You could see that the 'lumps' in his forehead from being pressed up against my pelvis had calmed down immediately.

My mum came with me. She was reading the leaflets afterwards, and commented on how it would have helped my wee brother, who did have glue ear.

i agree with sunny angel above actually, i was going to post something similar! i had grommets as a child and even now (aged 27) have problems with catarrh. reducing dairy intake makes a huge difference

i've never had cranial osteopathy but i did go to a chiropracter who asked me on my first examination whether i had problems with my ears and sinuses. i was amazed and said yes, and he explained i had a kink in my neck which narrowed the passages that my eustacian tubes and sinuses drain away from. after chiropractic treatment i didn't have a bad cold (i.e blocked sinuses/ears) for 18 months.

however, it is very expensive, i assume you can't get it on nhs, even for kids. to be honest, having grommets wasn't a bad experience, apart from the uncoolness of having to wear a swimming cap all the time.
  • I have no idea if it will help glue ear or not. Perhaps you could ring them for advice?

I will share my experience of cranial osteopathy. I went when my LO was 5 weeks old due to having had vontouse and forceps.

It cost £25(london) for each 30 minute session so not cheap but it was well worth the money for us.

I called her 'the lady with the healing hands', she worked wonders although it seemed she was doing nothing at the time! LO was relaxed immediately and I could see it in his breathing rhythm.

I am not sure if this is a coincidence or not but 2 things happened after the first session. LO slept through the night for the first time and has done ever since. Also, he latched on the breast for the first time. I had lots of difficulty feeding him and ended up expressing the first 5 weeks, so this was an amazing outcome for us. Whether this is because of c-o I don't know, but I am sure it helped.

I would give someone a call and get their advice first.

If you need a recommendation for the person I have seen in London(not sure where you are) or any other help, please PM me.

    JT x

    Best of luck
    It's great in here! :)

    hi
sorry i cant offer any knowledge about cranial osteopathy, however i just want to mention hopi ear candles (obviously i dont know how old your little one is, it might not be suitable as you do have to lie still!) but might be worth looking into. ? these are supposed to clear fluid build-up. i have seen them for sale at julian graves health food stores. also, i have seen them for sale at chinese acupuncture/herbalist shops. (acupuncture is also highly recommended by the way, however it again depends on age!) hope this helps.

i am a trained therapist and i did i course in hopi ear candle, basically they work as a vacum to , they help remove wax/fluid from the ear are suitable for children aged 2 upwards are avaible from gmc health shops. you can use a paper plate make a hole in the middle of it to make sure the ash of the candle doesnt fall on ur child or scare them. they are made from a natural ingredient. i would highly recommend them, you can also buy them from revital hq in ruislip middlesex,, good luck pm if you need anymore advicex

I definitely agree with this Sunny Angel. Luckily I knew about the negative impact of dairy products very early on. It would always affect my little one's sleep and he would get conjunctivitis, blocked up noses etc. Waking up every two hours and tossing and turning etc. As soon as I stopped giving him dairy he slept throught the night and all his other problems disappeared etc. Dairy is mucus producing in a lot of people, in fact more than is realised.
  • I would highly recommend the Osteopathic Centre For Children if you live anywhere near London or Manchester. They train Qualified Osteopaths in Paediatric osteopathy who then get a recognised Massters in Paediatric Osteopathy. It is a registered charity[1003934] and so you pay what you can afford by donation. They treat many kids up to 18 and also pregnant and postnatal mothers. the Manchester phone no. is 0161 277 9911 but it is not manned every day -definitely on Tuesdays though.

With regards to dairy, i would agree with you, it is very mucus forming, but what about calcuim intake, would soya be a good sub?
