whats cheaper to run, gas cooker, central heating or emmersion

Here goes

I live in a small 2 bed house, if the gas cooker is on it is more than adequate to heat the ground floor of the house on gas mark 5, i know this because when i cook potatoes i have to turn the heating off. Do you think its cheaper to have the gas oven on gas mark 5 than gas radiator central heating.

The other question is, how much does it cost to heat hot water on the emmersion. I only really need hot water in teh evening for one bath, the washing machine is cold fill and i only do one lot of washing up a day. is it cheaper to do the hot water on the emmersion (sp?) or the gas boiler?

So many variables will affect the costs involved, not least of which is the weather!
The best way to compare is to take gas and electric meter readings at the same time each day and use the different methods of heating. Look at your latest bill to see how to equate those readings to actual cost. Tip - with gas on a daily reading, you'll probably need to consider the fractions of units, especially if it's an imperial meter reading hundreds of cubic feet. Since you've probably got many items using electricity, it's a good idea to take electric meter readings on days when you are not using the immersion heater as well as when you are.
Bit of work involved there, but it will give you a reasonable idea.

I would have thought that using an immersion heater would cost more than using gas, but it depends on the settings for each device and what temperature they are heating up to.

  • I would avoid running gas rings on a cooker to heat your house as this will create lots of condensation. Much better using the CH.

As for the emmersion the amount it will cost over a year really isn't worth worry about. If you have one bath it'll probably cost less than £50 a year.

Do not leave a gas cooker on to heat a house !

It is not a heating appliance and is only meant for occasional short term use..i.e cooking.

People have died because they used a cooker as a heater.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Your thermostat should turn the heating off as the house temperature rises.

My heating turns off when my OH has the oven on to do a lot of baking.
