In which case, you are going to struggle to get that deposit back.

You could sue the landlord for three times the amount of the deposit, but given their antics, you might struggle to actually get the money from them. One poster managed because he got a charge on their house.

Where are the LLs living. Have they bought that house?

    You are welcome.

    Well.

The best thing might be to write regsitered post to you lovely landlord and ask them in which deposit scheme they have protected your money. Ask for a copy of the documentation. Hopefully that will push them into getting it sorted.

    Mean-time

    1. They do not have permission to sub-let
    2. Until the deposit is secured they have no way to evict you

I suggest as soon as you get confirmation of the deposit being secured, you get out of there ASAP. Start looking for other properties now.

I am frankly gob-smacked that your council is paying LHA to cover the rent on a property which it must know is owned by the Housing Association (and was once owned by themselves).

How very strange... I am wondering if the letter could be some sort of admin error or genetic letter sent out to everyone using an old database or something. Very surprised that the LA would pay LHA for a property that belong to a HA when the claimer is not the official tenant. I would imagine they have some way to check claims otherwise surely its just open to abuse

It would not surprise me if it was a duff letter, nor that a COuncil did not know if they owned a property.

    OP

have you checked the Land Registry?

The Land Registry site is here. Unfortunately it only operates during the wek so you'll have to wait till Monday. £4 to download the Title document and see who owne the property.
yes I do have an address but only on the short tenancy agreement.
Well that should be the official address for writing to your 'landlord'! (Don't know why you say 'only'???)

The first thing that I would do is, inform the so called Landlord that you know that the property is owned by the Housing Association, and the second is stop paying the Landlord rent.

It is an awkward position to be in and I don't envy you at all.
