Sell or keep gold necklass?

If you invest the proceeds in a cash account that could well do worse over the long term than gold - though who knows what might happen to the gold price. Cash will probably just about keep pace with inflation if you're lucky.

I would agree, cash savings is not an investment right now. Most people who hold cash are losing money to inflation.

This is why the gold price is rising so much. I dont believe that differential is going to end soon

Its more a case of what will you do with the proceeds. I would keep it as it is for use in future costs, the price of gold will likely peak with some quite horrible economic headlines so maybe it can be judged like that but dont just switch it to cash is my advice

UK cash is a piece of paper with a promise written on it. Its like carrying someones cheque around with you, avoid holding one for any longer then its immediately useful.

Anyway, the necklass [sic] is not the OP's to sell and it would be irresponsible parenting to influence a 12 year old to sell it for what seem like questionable motives.

Is this a question for an IFA or a family therapist?

Maybe I haven't made myself clear.
I have no intention of influencing a 12 year old.
I simply asked if it would be wise to sell a valuable necklace at this time or keep it as an investment. I am just seeking thoughts from people who might know more about the value of gold than me
If i needed a family therapist i would've sought help 3 years ago.
As for questionable motives, what on earth are you talking about??

If it belongs to your daughter then it really isn't up to you to sell it. Wait until she's 18/21/25 so that she can take any action (and risk) herself.

What would you do with the money if you sell it? And do you regard the necklace as an investment, a keepsake or is it just a reminder of bad things?

If you invest the proceeds in a cash account that could well do worse over the long term than gold - though who knows what might happen to the gold price. Cash will probably just about keep pace with inflation if you're lucky.

If you invest it in a low-charges unit trust the money should do relatively well over the long term (10 years plus) - though nobody knows for certain - and be a nice little nest egg.
I was thinking of the necklace in investment terms.
I know the price for gold is good atm, but dont know if it is wise to consider selling. If it was sold then the money would be put away till DD was 18.
I think she will definately want to sell it when she is older so i think its just a matter of right timing.
  • Let's apply some logic here....

1st: Is the old guy still alive ?

    If yes:

    Is he mobile ?

    If yes:

Sell it, and use the proceeds to keep him in Italy.

    If no:

Sell it, and use the proceeds to keep him in Italy.

    Satisfaction guaranteed !

Let her decide what to do with it when she is 18, simple.

Hard to advise you really, but I'm inclined to agree with diable - hide it away somewhere safe until she is 18 then let her decide.

Nobody knows for certain, of course, but chances are gold will do at least as well as cash in a building society.
