My car was bought new and is coming to it's 3rd year 1st of December.

When do I need an M.O.T. done ?

I know you need the certificate when your getting your TAX Disc (which is due next April). Is it anytime between December and April 07 I can get one ?.

It must be done by its 3rd b'day - can be done up to 1 month in advance and post dated to the b'day

As soon as your car is 3 years old it needs a MOT certificate. If you get stopped by the police or you have an accident you will have problems for not having a valid MOT.

I wouldn't say you need to spend time getting quotes, as the MOT fee is set by the government. Some outlets do discount that fee, but you'll never be charged more. The current fee is £44.15, so that's the most you'll pay.

What is worth doing is finding a reputable outlet - some places may well discount the MOT fee, but will soon claw that back with a few small items (wiper blades, indicator bulbs) and maybe even a few large ones!

Using a council operated MOT station won't save you anything on the fee, but will guarantee you that your car passes or fails on its own merit. Helpfully, MSE provides a list of them all right here.

My service is due soon so i'll have that done and then the mot then if they try and add on extras that I know were replaced on the service i'll know and tell them where to go.

Also I know around 6 places in my area that I can trust.

  • Why not have the service and MOT done at the same time, many places offer a discount for this.

I assume you had an SORN for a period, as your tax expires 4 months after the car's birthday and tax is only sold in 6 month blocks?

You should be able to negotiate a discounted MoT if done at the ame time as your service. Many of the items checked are examined/adjusted as aprt of a normal service and so no need to double up on the work.

No, I didn't have a SORN, it's due next year sometime. I got it for a year but unsure of the exact date without getting off my !!!! and going outside and looking.

I've booked my service for the 31st of October as the warrenty runs out 28th November and rarther than do it closer to when it runs out, I'm wary of them taking time to get parts if their needed , just so the warrenty has passed and I have to pay.

So it's in next tuesday, they said they'd do the MOT also but it needs to be done in the same month as the 3rd Birthday.

I'll get the service done on Tuesday and take it back to them early November for the MOT.

Tuesday is the best day for me next week or i'd have done it the 1st of November to fall in the same month.

It seemed like a good idea when I wanted a new car, I just went out and got it.

I should have noticed the annual things needed and now I have a Service, MOT & Insurance all due in November.

That'll teach me for the future.
