New Laptop - Sub £400

Hi all.
This is my 1st ever post and really need some help!!
I'm planning on buying my wife a new laptop but after hours of searching have got no further and probably confused myself even further.
We use the laptop for general surfing, photos, films, a few games and a bit of work now and again!!
I found this which I think looks ok ... Toshiba Satellite C650D-12J for £399.97 after a discount of £100 at Currys.
I heard Toshiba, Acer or Dell are pretty good??
Your recomendations will be greatly recieved. Many Thanks.

  • Personally I wouldnt go for a toshiba if its low end spec the build quality doesnt tend to be too great ie the laptop casing isnt that strong keyboards mouse pad and sometimes issues with the hinges. Acer tend to do some good spec laptops at low prices but again worth having a look at the casing sometimes can be a little naff. My personal choice is hp pro books only as iv never had one thats broken but they are a little more pricey. Id take a look at ebuyer tho they always have some decent deals on

Thanks, i've managed to find this laptop at currys ...... ACER Aspire 5736 for £379.97 reduced from £499.97.

Do you think this is good value for money or are there better laptops out there within this price range?
  • Doesn't look bad at all.

Comet currently do a HP for £349 that has a Pentium but it only has 2Gb of ram.

IIRC The p6000 is quicker than the one on Currys website

Worse CPU than the Dell below, £20 more, no Office Starter, however it does have a dedicated graphics card.

I'd prefer a Dell built laptop rather than Acer.

I'd suggest this (same spec virtually however it also has Microsoft® Office Starter 2010 (Word Starter, Excel Starter) and it's £10 less):

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N00N5320&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756&acd=c4e3cb6ef8f95b96b0f4989d244503f9

    Win 7
    T4500 2.30 GHz CPU
    3GB RAM
    320GB HDD
15.6" High Definition (1366x768) WLED Display with TrueLife
Microsoft® Office Starter 2010 (Word Starter, Excel Starter)
1 year Collect & Return Hardware Support included with your PC
    £369.00

Can't find better for the price.

    Thankyou for your replies.

The Dell machine looks very good, but is this good for home use such as games & surfing or is it more of a business computer?

Also, the Acer laptop calls itself a 'notebook'?? Is this a proper laptop of a netbook thingy??

Notebook means the same as Laptop, netbook would usually be labeled netbook.

What type of games are we talking about?

Nothing with major graphics as its more strategy. Its a football manager game called football manager/championship manager. From what I understand it needs a fast processor and lots of memory.

Then the Dell machine is for you. When you say "business" or "home user" it's still the same chasis, same CPUs, same memory, you'd probably just get less crap installed by default e.g. Norton 30 day trial.
