Amoxicillin Capsules BP-500mg-Too big to swallow!

Options
Hiya,

As the title says, I have been prescribed these and have a problem swallowing big tablets anyway. I just wondered if there was another way to take them other than going back to the chemist to get the liquid stuff (as I will feel silly!)

Is it safe to open the capsules and mix with a yoghurt or transfer to smaller capsules?

Many thanks

No, they have to be taken in their capsule form. Also you can't just go to the chemist and ask for a different formulation, you would need to go back to the prescriber for a new prescription for the liquid which is likely to be denied unless the swallowing problems are medical purely due to the liquid preparation being a lot more expensive than the capsules.

Have you tried taking them with milk or a smoothie consistency drink instead of water? Follow up with a drink of water.

    Hiya,

Never knew they came in liquid form.

Knew they came in powder and tablets.

As GlasweJen says you should never prise open tablets or crush them to take them unless you have been told to.

The reason they are in the form and coating is to allow the proper release of the medication.

Pill crushing is a big no no. I know this is a 4 year old report from the BBC but it can be fatal.

The amoxicillin 250mg capsules are smaller.

You might be able to get twice as many of these and take them 2 at a time.

That might well need a new prescription though.

Being able to swallow things like that is only practice. Buy yourself some jelly beans and work on it! :D
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • The powder inside is small compared to the capsule. The last time I took them, I just crushed them in a bit and found it easier to swallow.

Otherwise - A spoon full of sugar with it?...
  • Thank you all so much.

The report and the thought of having to go back to my docs to ask for liquid was too embarrassing, i just went and had another go and just swallowed it without thinking and it went down...phew...im still shaking a bit!

Im such an idiot but thank you all such much for the advice :jx
