Heating Cost of empty rooms

Can anyone help settle this dispute.

Where we live at the moment there are two unused room...got stuff stored in them.

I thought we would save money by turning off the radiators in those rooms, but hubby reckons the hot water from the boiler circulates so turning them down/off makes no difference..

Who's right?
Was a 40 a day smoker for 20 years.
Decided to give up, and haven't had a fag for 12 years.
Halfway through losing six stone.

Looking forward to early retirement.

Read the bottom post from daveh01. Looks like you are right :-)
  • If you close the doors, then you are right, if they are open then your hubby is right.

If the rads are turned off then they won't radiate any heat.
He is correct in that there is some heat loss from the pipework, but this is far less than from the rads. The overall effect is that with the rads off, the return flow is hotter and so the boiler will burn less gas. Obviously there come a point at which it would be uneconomic to turn off any more rads though, but 2 rads on the average system would be fine (as long as the doors are shut of course).
If his argument held true, then logically you could heat your house just as well by turning off all the rads-want to try it?
