AOL Broadband Unlimited Usage?

Hi everyone, I've been an AOL member for over 10 years and earlier this year AOL called me to offer a new package which would be cheaper then what I was paying (which was £24.99 a month on the old AOL Broadband Gold package) they told me the new package would cost £19.99.

The first thing I asked is whether there would be small usage cap of 10GB like their are on the new plans. The guy on the phone told me there wouldn't be a usage limit but obviously they do have one somewhere along the line. Does anyone know what this fair usage limit is?

I've just checked my AOL bill online and I seem to be on the "AOL Broadband Wireless" plan at £19.99 but directly underneath there is,

Unlimited Usage Charge - £0.00


So could it really be unlimited? I've tried finding out countless times what the download usage cap is for us 'long serving members' on this package but no luck. It would just be nice to know an accurate figure so I can download without having to wonder if I'm overstepping the limit. Does anyone else who are on AOL have this Unlimited Usage Charge on their online bill?

Seems to vary, Had people exceed 40gb and had emails others claimed to have downloaded more but never been contacted.

AOL are now a waste of money, What do you get for your £19.99 a month? You should be able to get your BB for half that cost.

I was with AOL for many years, When CPW took over they started cutting back on the service, Content and quality suffered.
Now they offer nothing for the extra fee.

Do you actually needed unlimited? If not, £19.99 is an absurd amount to pay. Go to https://www.samknows.com and look for your LLU options.

Perhaps you will be kind enough to advise where one can get BB at half of the cost, I have AOL BB and I have been informed that my charge is being increased from £14.99 per month to £19.99.

I would be willing to shift to another provider @ £10 per month, but I don't think it's possible, FWIW We don't have LLU in our small exchange and are unlikely to in the future.

So what can you offer to a customer in a non LLU exchange then?

Plusnet Value would be £12.99 on a Market 1 exchange (first 3m £6.49), but that's a capped tariff, Plusnet Extra is £17.99.
Factor in £30 cashback via the moneysupermarket.com link and it comes down a bit further over the first year.
£10 pm on an M1 exchange is not possible due to the wholesale cost.

True Unlimited at £11-75 pm is what i get with F2S but thats as a long standing customer who has twice asked for a MAC code and been offered a better deal by the retentions team .

However as the average customer profit for an ISP is around £20 a year its getting harder to get good deals .

I've been with AOL since 2007. I pay my line rental to BT. I get unlimited broadband usage. My phone calls (01/02/03) are free 24/7. I used to pay £9.99 pm but since 2009 I'm paying £6.99 pm.

utility warehouse office broadband at 5.99 about uncapped they are also bringing out fiber optic for 20-25 pound a month

Before they got sold to idiots they were a good company.

Before indian call centers were invented they were good.

Before LLU was invented they were good.

Before ADSL Max was invented they were good.

All for £16.00 a month for 12 months. I was paying £18.90 a month and never had free international calls.


I have been with AOL from 1998 (but had a new account from 2004)

I have often gone over the 40GB and had no emails one month i hit 100+GB and heard nothing but then i do most of my downloading at night.

I've been an AOL customer since 1996 - I remember being a nervous newbie who was attracted by their browser and so-called parent friendly safety guards (kids all grown up now so no more worries there) - think I started off on dial-up and then took the 'massive leap' onto 1mb broadband for £19.99 per month and stayed on that for a long time (it only supplied one creaky pc back then) - after toooo long I realised that you didn't HAVE to use their browser and in 2004 we got our first wi-fi router (Netgear DG834GT) and only used the AOL browser to set that up and then moved onto Explorer and then Chrome. I then threatened to leave a couple of times and that got the 1mb down to £9.99 and it stayed that way until Carphone Warehouse took over and they actually contacted me and offered to take over the landline, include almost all phone calls (day and night) and up the speed to 3 or 4mb (I think) and all for a total of £19.99 per month - I well remember almost biting their arm off!! Just over a year ago I asked for more speed and now I'm on the 12mb service which is plenty enough for now - they also let me pay the line rental annually which brings the monthly cost down to £17 per month (far far less than what I paid just for calls 15 plus years ago).
Thing that really prompted this reply was that yesterday I finally changed our old DG834GT (8 years old) for the N300 - nowadays we have so many things attached to it and it was showing its age by regularly disconnecting from the net and needing a reboot (feel the same myself somedays..) and so far so good - net is a little faster and no disconnections (so I can stop slagging AOL off now) but this new router has the ability to record total usage and it got me to thinking about limits - 4 internet savvy adults in this house means we must use loads and now I will be able to see exactly how much - anyway Googled AOL download limits and here I am - I keep seeing references to a 10GB limit and no way am I on that; we have never been emailed re usage and the service isn't throttled (actual speed is a pretty steady 9mb); perhaps I'm on a special allowance for being such a loyal customer (:D) so it will be interesting to find out what we use.....I will report back in a week or so with results!! Sorry for slightly long and rambling post....
