Never heard of cooking it in a frying pan - always in an oven. It's such a dense bread I can't imagine the pan being able to cook it right through without burning it. Don't think you need to beat yourself up about that.

tawnyowls - the bread I am referring to, soda bread, isn't so common outside Ireland. I am talking about the flat white bread, only about an inch tall in total. It is very soft and fluffy when done properly and isn't at all "dense". I've tried to find a picture to show you what I mean but can't find one. You might find little packets of it in Tesco or Sainsbury's. It is traditionally baked on a griddle (or a frying pan if you haven't got a griddle) because years and years ago when the recipe was invented a typical Irish home didn't have an oven and so food was cooked over the open fire. There is also brown soda bread - which we often refer to as wheaten - which is loaf shaped, either round or long and rectangular and that is baked in the oven. Trust me, I know what I am talking about:D, even I am not so dim to try and bake an entire loaf on a griddle (or my cheapskate frying pan). :D My soda bread (or soda farls) were like crispy leather, a long way from being soft and light...

Is it OK to squeal on a friend? One of my friends had invited me round for dinner. It was a fabulous meal as she is a very good cook and goes to a lot of effort. The pudding was a lovely homemade chocolate mousse. I was about half way through mine and found a very long hair curled in the middle of it... My poor friend nearly died...

Another blunder was an over ambitious dinner party I gave - got the timings all wrong and nothing was ready. The guests ended up doing a lot of the cooking:o.

    Snowy,

I think the confusion might be in the name. What we in Northern Ireland call soda bread, others might call soda farls. There are are some pictures of soda bread (or soda farls) here.

Sorry yours didn't work as planned! :o Better luck with the potato bread!

~ Knew I had to 'boil wash' terry nappies when I had my eldest child ... my mother was horrified to find me stirring boiling nappies on the stove in her preserving pan :o (It was the only one big enough! )

~ Bathing 1st child for the 1st time at home in the baby bath, carefully washed his front, very carefully turned him over to wash his back, made certain my forearm was supporting his neck ... MIL raced in, grabbed him quick ... his face was in the water! :o

~ Decided to trim eldest child's hair at home on his first day at school, just a little around his ears to tidy it up ... silly beggar turned his head just at the wrong moment ... *snip* .. through the top iddy bit of his ear :o:o

Ahh, those were the days when you could make honest mistakes, all in the name of OS, and not be reported to the SS :rotfl:

Thought I`d save money by buying hair clippers to do my son`s hair, never put the attachment on properly and half way through doing one side it flipped off the clippers and he ended up with a huge bald stripe across his head.So I had to give him a baldy haircut(Open Blade).

Sadly that wasn`t the only time I`ve done it.lol.

Hee hee! That sounds familiar! I did that to our youngest - started off with the clippers, straight up the middle of his head... then realised I had forgotten to put the attachment on!
It was October, so he spent the next couple of weeks wearing a hat whenever he went out!

hello, dont usually lurk here but you lot have made me laugh.

ive just had a nightmare in the name of money saving. sprinkled washing powder on my carpet to make it smell a bit nicer and then decided a little bit of scented talcum powder might go down a treat too.

ive managed to hoover most of it up but theres loads still in the pile. my dyson is refusing to pick it up.

was i wrong to work it in with a broom?

Please stop - I can't read for laughing! :rotfl: Good to know we're all human!

Queenie - your stories from when your kids were young reminds me of when I was wheening DS and gave him cooking apple puree rather than eating apple - couldn't undertsand why he didn't like apple and had a face like I'd just asked him to suck a lemon. Luckily he loves apples now.

I made cheesy ham pasta for visitors, who declined second helpings. I hadn´t tasted it myself, as I don´t like cheese sauce. Later, I discovered I´d used icing sugar to make the sauce instead of cornflour.

Oh I'm glad I've found this thread :D

This weekend, my MIL and SIL are staying over. MIL takes a "wee drop of vodka" in an evening so being a good MSEer, I duly went out and bought a bottle of Tesco value vodka which as alwasys, I was filtering ready to put into the Smirnoff bottle (she's never sussed it yet :D) We have 2 filter jugs, so the one with the vodka in was standing next to the voddy bottle - but I forgot to tell Mr TM which was which :o At tea, SIL asked for a glass of ribena..... she nearly choked to death having taken a HUGE gulp of basically neat vodke :rotfl:

Oh Queenie ...... Mr TM still teases DS1 about the time I snipped the top of his ear when I was cutting his hair :o I still cut their hair though.... and haven't managed another drawing of blood. However, he does stand VERY still when I'm trimming around his ears.
