I agree, I think a number of the older general public are embarrassed about what the younger members of society are having to go through now.
I just see a load of older people with cash in the bank that have had their free educations & benefited at a time of a country accumulating debt not wanting for fork out to the younger generation that will be paying for everyones education even their parents..Not Again0 -

We obviously move in different Social circles Stevie,lol......Most people who went to Uni would agree with you, however the vast majority of the Public didn't go to uni and can't see why they should subsidised the minority who over the course of their working lives on average earn £100,000 more . Your average working man isn't a masocist, why should they subsidise students at Uni to gain degrees many of which are little or no practical use?
Where the Government should be spending money is on Vocational training, proper apprenticeships and not the rubbish ,fudging training that we have seen over the past 20yrs. The last Conservative Government did little to address the problem and the last Nu -Labour crooks did even less, the result being we manufacture next to nothing and the quality of work in the Construction Industry is shamefull all down to lack of training.
As a patriot I am embarrassed that Welsh/Scottish students are subsidised at English Uni's Apartheid is alive and well here in the UK0 -

What percentage of "Older " people went to Uni ?
Many of these "Older " people left school at 14 or 15 , my own father joined the Royal Navy aged 15. They all worked , paid tax and used the benefits system as a last resort, in fact many are far too proud to claim any benefits now.0 -
You don't normally miss the the sarcasm
I'm not sure I have missed it though.1984ReturnsForReal wrote: »It would appear so JonnyB.
Obviously I must of slept through those student riots in the 1990s & 2000s.
Did they cause much damage?
I'm not sure now. This suggests '84 was serious.
Ah well, my bad if I missed it.
Just to make sure you're in no doubt Stevie, I think they're all lying shysters. (Which should please naerlynew)0 -

In general I agree with you in vocational training and higher quality and lower numbers of degrees, however I have to point out that on the last set of stats I saw we were number 6 in the industrial production league.

About 5% as opposed to the stated target now of 50%, this effectively reduces the majority of current degrees to the equivalent of 'A' level compared to days of yore when used for seeking employment, with the bonus of a large debt to pay off as well.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. I would suggest that the 50% figure would equate to around 4-5 O levels from 30 years ago. Many current degrees do appear to be completely worthless.0 -
