Phew!
Well I'm now up to date. Hope everyone is well.
Have had a major reading splurge recently:
which is a fascinating, & extremely pleasurable read not just about films, but being a journalist too. Autobiographical, passionate and fun. Some bit really made me laugh out loud!

very insightful. When I first read de Botton, I wasn't keen on his style. Then I read Status Anxiety & found that a fascinating book. After heading off on several jaunts this year (& planning a few next year) I thought it worthy of investigation. Recommended to many MSE-ers who may well enjoy.

I read a lot of Stephen King when younger. This was the first time in years I picked up a Stephen King book. To an extent, it was with a certain reluctance, but I hoped it would be quite a different read to his novels - which it is. Part autobiographical, part his take on successful writing, part telling of his side of the accident which nearly killed him several years ago, it was an accessible & easy to read book which always felt frank & honest. & it did make me think about pulling out one or 2 of the books I have by him I haven't read yet.
I've now started:
But I did get some ripper books for christmas, so it is only a matter of time before I go back to the investigation...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I dislike thin rooms. 3metres/10 feet can be a thin room even if it's just in one room. To then make that run for 11 metres is unbelievably long/thin.
What I'd be tempted to do is to look at opening the space up, but to separate the two with glass doors, as close to "folding entirely into the walls" as possible, so balancing the budget to install disappearing glass bi-folding doors -v- installing a pair of common or garden glass paned opening doors, also looking at whether you can find/fit glass doors that slide into the walls. That way you get the two separate rooms, but the whole room - and - the light flowing through.
Then I'd look at putting mirrors the length of the room, from waist to chest/shoulder height, to widen the room visually. Mirrors that you can't see yourself in facially as they're lower.
But what do I know... I've only ever lived in mobile homes and studios really0 -

I like this idea. The other nice thing is the mirrors would reflect the garden. I think some facial view would be inevitable if I use it as a dining room...as people will be seated and don't want to watch themselves chew...but I think it could be surmountable. Great ideas.0 -
Personally, 11 metres x 3 metres is going to be too long and narrow and feel like a corridor. Where would the windows be? In our last home we had a 7 metre x 3 metre room with a window at the narrow end and it didn't work, we ended up putting a settee across the width two thirds of the way down to square it off a bit, leaving an empty space at the doorway.
I'm inclined to agree. You'll have to very carefully plan zoning in a room like that.
Take your time with it. If you don't find the right answer straight away, it's better to wait and see how you use space over the longer term to see how it works for you.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks doozergirl, I know you have a lot of experience with this.
Zoning? is it such an issue for a room with one primary purpose where there is lots of other ''reception space? If routes though are clearish? we do use our current dining room , so a dining room isn't something that goes unused here.
ATM these rooms certainly are not getting good usuage. I only go into the current study to rummage through unpacked boxes of books and cds, and the garden room is a lovely, room, really nice feeling, but not used it much since it got cold.
I need to show you all the plans..just can't work out how ATM.
I hope you are feeling better today doozergirl. My cold is improving :j:j
we're looking forward to camping in the sitting room tonight but it feels odd having got used to so much space to be huddling in one room!0 -
STOP me spending money
bought loads on the kindle store, bought a new cover, then the sales and I still have to get a car. No wonder people complain about January being the diet month!
lir: hope you get some heating oil soon and don't get too cold.
and waves back to LJ0 -
