    Sorry, just reading back.

I woudn't mind a long dining "hall" type room but you would need to fill one end of a space so it doesn't feel too vast. I'm not really a fan of big open spaces because I prefer smaller rooms that can be heated for use. We have 2 smallish rooms (dining and living) which almost everyone in street has knocked through for a long big room but we won't. I can keep the living room (where we spend most of the evening) warmer and the dining room cooler (also useful for plants and things that are overwintered).

Also question of light though, we get enough light in both rooms so we don't need to use too much electricity. Mostly, it's how do you live and how would things fit?

Thanks. This is useful food for thought. we have two pieces of diningroom furniture that are large and would fill the wall space in the higher ceilings end of room, leaving the lower end/and part of higher end to take a long/narrowish dining table

room is not a route to anywhere ATM,but has french windows to garden, but we would put a door in to the new part.

FWIW I hate open plan living, but this house has a lot of downstairs for the size upstairs. We'd still have smaller sitting rooms and saces to ge away from each other/guests. If we only had two or three rooms I wouldn't consider it.

LIR - I think I am ok at visualising how to use space (the extension to the old house worked out very well and I think the plans I have for the new one will be very good, should they get approved) so I would be happy to look over your plans and give my thoughts - often having someone else's ideas can just help you to realise that your ideas are the best...

    Thank you! :):):)

I'm going to ask for an electronic copy or try and work out how to get these on to the computer.

Personally, 11 metres x 3 metres is going to be too long and narrow and feel like a corridor. Where would the windows be? In our last home we had a 7 metre x 3 metre room with a window at the narrow end and it didn't work, we ended up putting a settee across the width two thirds of the way down to square it off a bit, leaving an empty space at the doorway.

  • I'd be inclined to go for it because with careful choice of furniture that type of room could be very versatile. Formal dining, drinks receptions, informal buffets, as a base for out door dining (or shelter when it rains!). Think creatively and I perhaps see the possibility for hosting a String Quartet performance, art exhibition or even dancing!

If you get involved with the local community/church a room like that would be ideal for coffee mornings/cake sales etc. You could get a great Scalectrix track in there too :D

Two windows and a set of French windows down the long side. Doors would be one at either end plus double doors about a third of away down the other long side. (doors would go...double doors into sitting room, one door into drawing room and the other end into corridor to kitchen

edit: there is another door on the window less door side which leads into another downstairs room too, just along from the double doors)

Morag, I have to admit the idea of having room for live music is a plus...especially as DH is hoping to find time to be a mentor at his old music school starting next academic year.

That is better than we had. We had a door at one end and 7 metres away at the other end a window. It made the room appear even more long and narrow than it was.

I see what you mean. Narrow rooms are a pain, I didn't mean to end up with one or two of them!

The bedroom above the narrow room is going to become a dressing room I think.

Our heating oil has run out. we had third of a tank two weeks ago, so thats terrifying rate of use. I decided to put heating on low all the time because of the weather!

Well this continues to be one of the wierdest pre-Christmas weekends ever. I just went to my local Tesco to get bread. The roads were fine and there were few cars there. Then, having waited about 45 minutes to get served every previous weekend before Christmas, I walked straight up to a checkout with nobody in front of me. Very strange, but very good.

<lemonjelly pops up whilst still catching up with TNPT3>

Round our way (;)) supermarkets were also breadless for a couple of days the weekend before christmas because of the snow...
