No shed... but he's welcome to any space he can find out there, everything's crawling with slugs and woodlice :)

Had to flick a slug from the inside of the back door before I closed/locked it after I'd been outside.

Mmmm... is this to allow ePub format on Kindle though, or to allow Kindle proprietary onto Overdrive? The latter has the potential to kill off competition. Poss good news for libraries, but very bad for Sony et al.

We have some rather breaking news with online giant Amazon and their highly successful line of Kindle e-readers. It seems many publishers have been told by the company that in the near-future, they should be submitting their books to Amazon in EPUB format and not exclusively MOBI. They also went on to let us know that Amazon was indeed planning something BIG and that soon the Kindle ereader will have the full capability to read ePub books. This news has been confirmed by at least 4 publishing companies we have spoken with during the last few days.

There's an application called Calibre that will let you translate EPUB into MOBI in the meantime.

    Just realised......You have RAIN!

Ran to back door..... and we have rain too! :) It probably won't amount to much, but anything's better than nothing. (My log/pork supply is geared to the hay crop ;))

To expand a bit, AIUI the publisher is as liable as the writer for what is published. Presumably Martin (or MSE.com) would be the publisher in this case although in the T&Cs we agree to:
indemnify, defend and hold harmless us, our directors, officers, employees and licensors from and against any claim, liability, cost, damage or loss we may incur (including reasonable legal fees) as a result of any material that you post or transmit on our communication forums

Whether that would actually stand up in a law court is moot.

Finally finished my Y7 short reports. They are due in by 9am on Monday morning. It will be nice not to have them hanging over me tomorrow. :)

There will be plenty to do on Monday though. Last day to answer questions and sort out problems with my AS class who have their real external exam on Tuesday. My A2 class have a lesson, and I haven't yet marked their work to give back to them. Finally, I need to set the exam paper for Y7 so I can circulate it to the other Y7 teachers to check they're happy with it. It's 4 years since the last time I taught Y7, so I've no idea who set it last year, and whether or not the paper's worth using (most of) again. I don't think we've made many changes to what we're doing with them, so most of it should be OK to use, but then I'm a bit fussy about taking out the badly written questions, and putting in ones where it's clear what we want them to do (and preferably ones that are quick and easy to mark :D )
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Cheers Gen, so the initial news release from Amazon/Overdrive looks to have moved on quite a bit. This is good news IMO. I know about Calibre but it gets talked about in hushed tones by library users as - in effect - it means you have to break the T&Cs of the borrowing by turning something into something else.

In terms of the wider discussion that tomterm raised re eBooks, they are very good news for the most widely sold type of book: adult fiction and popular non-fiction. I think from there the next obvious market is less other types of book and more journals and newspapers - where there is a large and expensive delivery mechanism devoted to getting items out for a very short shelf life. This is one major advantage of virtual delivery.

Where eBooks currently can't compete as well or at all:
    * Children's picture books: children routinely destroy them as part of the process of learning to read because they are not manually dexterous - yet.
    * Children's board books which are not only "read" by younger children than picture books, they also contain different textures.
    * Children's books in general - here the issue is not a format one - it's more of whether or not a parent would want their child to have an eReader, the same type of issue as to whether they would want their children to have a mobile phone. Of course there are also issues of a different type of "digital divide" here too and children in poor families should have an equal right to access reading materials.
    * Art books and "coffee table" volumes - for obvious reasons
    * Text books - this is a moot one as for sure there are some that could be read on a Kindle, but they wouldn't all translate well.
    * Cookery books/garage manuals etc: again a bit of a moot one, but would you want to use your Kindle with hands with flour on or a bit of grease?

Though I also should say I'm not massively confident about working in a library if these are the only types of book I can borrow, yes libraries do other things, but books are the core of our offering.
