Sky+ box broken - help please

Hi, my box has decided to break down after 13 months. Sky say I will have to pay to get it repaired because it's no longer under warranty. I think that the box should last longer than just over a year and that I shouldn' have to pay. Does anyone else agree with me?

I've had a read of Martin's Consumer guide but would like to know what rights I have.

Thanks

Just ring them and tell them you want to cancel because of their unreliable equipment and that Virgin are offering you a better deal (look at their website to see what you could get to back up your claim first).

I'm sure they will agree to replace your box free of charge! ;)

I think you have the right for an item to last a reasonable time...and yes most people would agree that it should last longer than 13mths, however I suspect you wouldnt get very far with customer services on the phone with this argument...you would need to write and seek repair under sales of goods act.

I think however if you get put through to cancellations then you will get a new box a lot quicker/easier

Ours broke in july, I rang the cancellation line and said that I couldn't afford to replace it (and I wasn't going to pay to upgrade to HD). I explained that since january our TV and Oven had both broke and since Our new TV had integral freeview we would use that instead.

Within 2 minutes I was offered for free either a visit from an engineer or a new box ( I took the box).

It is worth pointing out though, I am not the main customer on our account (OH is) so although I can make changes to the account I cannot cancel it. (when they asked to speak to OH I told them he was at work).

  • Sagaris is right. Threaten to cancel. Its a no brainer. There's no point in paying for a service you can't use because of faulty equipment. I did the same at the beginning of the year when our normal sky box broke. The refurb box costs them next to nothing to replace versus the £40pm (sky+ multi-room) we were paying for the subscription.

They quickly sent an engineer out to replace the box.

Mine won't turn on. tried switching off at mains and still nothing. I'm preparing myself for the call to Sky.

A couple of threads mention fixing it yourself. Has anybody done this?
