C/H pump running continuously

hi
my boiler is set to turn off at 10pm and the pump runs for about 3/5 mins after. usually. last night it continued all night. so far today, the pump hasnt stopped. i turned the wall thermostat right down to see if it would.
is this damaging to the pump?
what could be the possible cause?
i dont know a tame plumber so would like to know (roughly) what i'm in for. i'm having to stop myself fiddling with things in case i make things worse. i have googled it and have confused myself
any advice gratefully received.

Your circulator will normally run under three conditions with the appropriate stat calling for heat:
CH On HW Off
CH Off HW On
CH On HW On
so it will continue to run even if you clic the roomstat off but the HW stat is still calling for heat.
Try turning both stats down in the same timescale and see what happens. If you do that and the pump stops running (after its usual run-on time) then you have a faulty stat and you will be able to identify which one.
Do this first.

thanks keystone but the boiler was off with the pump running all night.
when i turned the thermostat down, the hot water was off. pump still running after 15 mins so i then put the hot water on for an hour, and i have just heard the pump stop (the hour was up). wheres the confused smilie when you want it .
i have to say i dont have the hot water on much at all and i live in a hard water area, perhaps something is furred up?0 -
Gremlins! I can only suggest you monitor it.

Hi,
Is it connected to a Potterton Suprima?

the boiler is an ikon 60-80 fanned flue. put in 2004, had no end of problems but thought it was sorted. the house is an x showhouse mid 80's, microbore, extremely hard water area.
doesnt help that the house was thrown up and plumbing looks like it was put in by an apprentice with the supervisor spending time at the local, not my words.0 -

Hi...pump running continuously for this boiler suggests a PCB issue...you might have to watch this for a while before it fails more comprehensively.
P.S. This is a rebadged Glow-worm.....not their finest hour.;)

oh dear
is it ok for the pump for this to happen? ie call plumber asap or turn off heating? or can it wait till i can get one?
i'm worried it will have knock on effect or burn out the pump.0 -
Frost stat??.........Not Again0
-
not that i'm aware of, the boiler is from 04 and the pump was replaced 08. its never happened before.0

Hi,
It didn't sound like a frost stat problem but would be worth checking.
If you have an intermittent problem than you need to make sure it's in fault state before you get someone in.
As long as the pump has a circuit to pump water around it will be fine.
I would assume as the boiler has pump overrun then it would have a bypass to accommodate this.
