Any ideas for cheaper car insurance

  • Me and my son spent hours trawling the internet for quotes most over 2 grand. He could have me as the owner but I have a car as does his dad and our no claims are used on them, so I come up as having no no claims as does his dad. Does anybody know any companies at about £1000 for him on a 6 year old VW.
  • That seems an awful lot Spongebob :undecided

I would expect that quote to be around the £600 mark. My first car was a 1l Y Reg Fiesta and I got a quote of £700 and that was in 1998!!

I assume the quotes are for Third Party Fire and Theft, not Fully Comprehensive insurance?

You need to get a car in a lower insurance group really. The value of the car is irrelevant as TPF&T insurance is to cover repairs to things/people you hit, which may be worth much more than your own vehicle.

Check the excess, it can make a difference. Take Pass Plus as that can help. Check it's TPF&T not fully comp (especially if the car is old and worth less than £1K). Where do you leave the car overnight and can you change that to make it more secure? How old is your brother? If he is still 25 or under it will make a difference despite his years of driving. What's the annual mileage - can you reduce it?

It sounds as if you are in an inner city area? So radical suggestions include moving house to a less risky area, or waiting 5 years until you are over 25. However, these are not necessarily to be taken serously! :)
