Any ideas for cheaper car insurance

Hi there,
I have just passed my driving test at 20. My brother has given me his car
. Now I am trying to get it insured. All of the quotes I'm getting are ridiculously high... So does anyone have any advice regarding cutting the costs (and yes I am reading through the guides on here, just need any personal advice that you may have). Student in need!
Thanks,
Sponge.

Best advice I can give is to get a yellow pages and call as many 0800 no's as your patience allows. Once you get a quote, knock a few quid off it when the next co asks what your best quote has been.
For example, Co A quotes £300, Co B asks what your best quote is, you say £280. They will either beat or match it if they want your business or they will tell you they can't come near to it. If they beat or match it and pressure you to take out the policy say that you have a few more co's to call first.
You can also usually get a lower premium by upping the voluntary excess.
If I think of anything else I'll come back

Just a thought but try Swiftcover.com Everything is done by email and I saved £60 on my renewal over the traditional paper based companies - but I am not 20!0

Try Endsleigh...
I was with Tescos for 4 years from the age of 21 - 25 (you might want to try them too!) and have recently switched as Endsleigh gave me a fantastic rate. They also have a freephone number and branches all around the company so you can call (24 hours a day too) or go into the shop to chat about anything you like :money:0 -
Yes I agree about Endsleigh. My younger daughter was still at Uni when she first needed her own insurance and i was amazed how reasonable Endsleigh were. SHe was only a bit older than you, (21) and if I remember accurayely the premiun was about £400 pa which was under half what some of her mates were paying. Good luck.:T0

I am a new driver and Prudential was miles cheaper then anyone else.
Plus if you are a student, you get it a bit cheaper!
Good luck!!
You will need it and loads of patieence to trawl every insurance avenue, my quote from them was a third cheaper and although I only passed in August, I had provisinal insurance with them, so I have 1 year NCB. I am due for renewal i a few weeks and as stated above, it will be cheaper to take out a new policy. I have been trawling for weeks now myself and I'm still getting ridiculous quotes. Just persevere and you will find what you are looking for.:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.
If you are there always for others, then in time of need, someone will be there for you.

Hi -have you tried?
Search engines - confused/insuresupermarket/quotezone/theidol.com/comparethemarket
Insurers - quinndirect/bell/elephant/ecarinsurance
brokers - directchoice/quotelinedirect
cashback sites/postoffice £50.00/prudential via quidco £100.00
others /passplus ~ 25-30% discount/add mum as driver
Happy hunting!0 -
agree with flossy_splodge ... endsleigh has been unbeatable for our daughter for 3 years now since she passed her test . This years endsleigh has done through zurich which suprised me as on their own site they were £ hundreds out.
for all of our car insurances ....we check all the confused.com and insuremarket.com ... then checked quite a few of their cheapest suggestions directly on the sites ... and before you start .. do a list of the best cashback offerrings on quidco and topcashback. .. and also check which companies are not covered on the cashback sites .
Very often for teenage boys , norwich union is the best .. but our 18 year old son has just passed his test and we've gone with RAC ... who were 10% cheaper than NU ... ( but are now owned by NU !)
My own car last year i was with lloyds at £285 less £90 cashback from quidco . .. just gone through the motions and have done next years through Prudential at £269 less £100 topcashback !!0 -
Hi
I used to be a driving instructor and a lot of my pupils would try and go on their parents policy for the first year just to build up some experience and sometimes a years no claims.
Maybe you should have a nice word with them and see what they can do.
Hope this helps a bit.0 -
Also another option is to do the pass plus with your instructor as some companies can knock up to 20% off your premium if you can prove you have done pass plus.
Unfortunately a small portion of drivers are running up the premiums due to accidents from driving beyond their capabilities etc.
But in the end we all pay for it dont we????0 -
Thanks for all your responses guys, appreciate the help.

Ive gone through most of your suggestions but Im trying to get insured on a 1.6, with my brother as main driver who has a protected NCB of over 7 or 8 years. Yet I havent had one quote below £1k thus far (also protecting the NCB of my brother still). Ive gone through confused and insurancesupermarket... Going to have a go at Prudential and Tesco is a problem as my car is a 1995 M registration so its worth well below 1k (though I will experiment with that just to see if their price is any different).
Anyways, I will keep you posted on this thread and thanks again.[interpreneur]0
