Yes the teller should notice but being realistic if they can see a queue of people behind you they are going to be trying to work out how to get the queue of customers down by working more quickly.

However you should also tell the teller that you have a foreign currency cheque.

That way you have performed a double check on the process.

After all we are all human and everyone makes mistakes. :D

Yes we are only human, and yes everyone makes mistakes, but when your employed by a bank to handle other peoples' money you're paid not to make mistakes. There was no queue, 3 cashiers and one other person being served.

I'd be amazed if they quibbled about covering the $20 charge.

Everyone is paid in their job not to make mistakes doesn't mean they don't happen.

Anyway the best way to deal with complaint with nationwide is to send a recorded delivery letter to Member Service. Calling them up doesn't do anything as while you may end up speaking to a nice person they don't have the power to do anything.

In your letter simply state that as a member you feel counter staff are not receiving adequate training to check that the notes/cheques that are being paid in are in sterling. Then state the amount you have lost in fees and point out the society could lose money if someone did the Euro note thing you described before.

They are likely to credit you with more than the money you lost over the fees and cost in postage, if you don't go into a rant slagging of the staff. ;)

A manager may phone and speak to you as well.

You know what to do next time then... take it yourself :) you would need to sign the negotiation form anyway if its a soul account.or at least pre-complete one and hand it in at the same time next time, so no confusion

I've never completed a pre-complete form when putting in cheques in Nationwide. They don't have them on the counters.

No - but with a foreign currency cheque you have to sign it on the back before paying it in. So - especially if it's not you paying it in - you have to do things before taking it to the bank.

If you pay in a wad of £20 notes and have a 20 euro note in amongst them the teller should notice it, shouldn't they? It's no different fr cheques.

Euro notes are rather more obviously different from sterling ones - a cheque is a cheque where all the teller is probably doing is checking it's signed.

The teller us supposed to check the date, written amount, numerical amount, signature and currency.

did you not say you're wife paid the cheque in, you seem very sure about how busy the bank was.

I do speak to my wife you know! :)

I never said otherwise. Could it not have just been a way to blame the cashier. Saying it was quiet so must have been cashiers fault for not taking time to check?

    I'm just sayin'

not accusing you or your wife of lying just a possibility
