I don't know how old your children are, but mine are all delegated tidying, hoovering and dw duties on a rotating basis! I do it as well, but they give it a quick go round usually after teatime, so ds might hoover the sitting room or dining room or hall, whichever they've created the most mess in usually, dd1 unload and load the dishwasher, and dd2 tidy around, usually picking up school bags, shoes, assorted bits, etc. dd3 generally has to tidy up whatever she's been doing and enjoys wiping down the bath or shower - she's usually sent off to get clean to stop her making more mess and annoying the others!

The children all know that they have to help and whilst they moan sometimes, they are all pretty good most of the time at helping out.

  • On a daily basis I have to have a quick hoover

i leave hoovering for OH as he is in bed nearly all day as he works nights!! so anything that makes a lot of noise is out!!

After i've picked DS and friend up from school, dropped friend at home ,woken OH up,picked DD up from dance club at school, feed kids, waited for in laws to arrive, go to parents evening, have tea, bath kids, kids to bed:eek: i will sit down and do a meal plan for the rest of the week!!

    Hello,
You sound just like me except for the smoking and elderly dog.

I seem to rush around all the time, achieve nothing and always feel exhausted !

I can't get my head around meal planning yet or the flylady but give me time.
I think it easier to change small things.

Did I understand right that you want to change three short shifts at work to one longer one? This might be a good place to start. Have a word with employer and see if you can change. This should (in theory !) free up more time in the week for 'being organised' .

I agree with PP who said break the decorating up into chunks. Over the years I have completely decorated this house as DH is disabled and can't do ladders etc. I don't have the time or energy to spend a whole weekend doing a complete makeover of a room. However I was able to spend two hours painting a door ,One hour stripping wallpaper, little jobs fitted in . It means you have to live with half decorated rooms for a bit but eventually you get there. In a way it's better as there is less mess if you only do one little bit at a time and put everything away. If you are going back soon then paintbrushes can be wrapped in clingfilm to save endless cleaning. To be honest they are much easier to clean after an hours painting than a whole days though.
Maybe you could get DS to help with some things like wallpaper stripping in his room. Kids quite like helping decorate and an extra pair of hands does make a difference.

Good luck , I shall be watching and hoping you can inspire me to become more organised too.

Sorry "old doggy" is very old, 17 yrs and 3mths, which is a grand age for a doberman size dog, she is blind, deaf (selective!),tottery, is getting worse by the day although i was going to have her put to sleep on monday and had geared myself up for it she perked up so we didn't take her.

    Hi Mrs Weasley ...

I was in the same boat a few months back ... very old woggis of 18 plus ... All her faculties were going and she was getting very weak ... but generally well ... I understand the 'perking up' statement ... I would decide enough was enough ... and then she would look so happy to see her dinner and i'd feel like the grim reaper ...

In the end I took her and had her put to sleep ... but afterwards I felt it was due time ... and now she sits on my desk in a little pot jar ... :o

It is an exceedingly hard thing to 'choose' to do ... but do not feel bad at all if you feel it is time ... or indeed if you want to wait a little longer ... We are the guardians and friends of these animals ... and with all it's ups and downs ... we also have I am sure ... their permission to make the best decision for them in love and kindness ...

    LittleGettingABitWeepyBill ... :^)

PS ... I agree with the others that have said to make your list a little more manageable ... but make a start ... doing just one thing is a great incentive and moral booster ... My suggestion would be the thing with the shifts ... Best wishes .... :^)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have had 2 put to sleep over a period of 20+ years and it is the most peaceful thing.

I wouldn't want to say much as I don't want to upset you but if I had the choice and I knew my number was soon to be up I would def like to go the same way. I couldn't believe how quick and peaceful it was.

    Mrs W,

I know what you mean abou the FlyLady thing - if you've seen the official (US) site it's  ! To me, she seems quite patronising.

On the other hand - the MSE version is much more friendly - nothing's set in stone and everyone pitches in to help with advice if they can. I've dipped in and out of that thread and really enjoyed it.

The one thing I have taken from Flylady is the "Shiny sink" idea. She's actually right - if you come in to a clean kitchen, with no washing up left draining it looks so much better. I've been doing that for a while now and it does become a habit.

One little thing at a time. That way it's manageable. Whatever mess you've got didn't get there overnight.
  • sorry haven't posted..........busy busy busy:rolleyes:

thanks to everyone who has replied, will work my way through sorry if i miss anyone!

[STRIKE]3. tell DB i want to finish 1 shift at work (currently do 7 3hour shifts spread out over 5 days, simplifying life thread!)
    [/STRIKE]

:T Told boss/DB last night i wanted to finish tuesday nights:T he said ok but was rather shocked:rotfl: he definately wasn't expecting that:rotfl:

Old doggy is still bouncing round as best she can (!) this week even bertie noticed an improvement yesterday (shopping day), so it wasn't my imagination.

Food shopping came to £28.70:T BUT i must not go to MR S again this week:rolleyes: I think i am addicted:o , did a spending diary over the last 2 weeks and i went in nearly everyday:eek: serious problem there me thinks:o

That brings me to my meal plan which i said i'd post, bit late but it gives you an idea of what goes on in our (mad) house!

MON-sausage (1/2 price MR S) egg (basics) beans (basics) bread (HM)

TUES-chicken stew(HM out of freezer) dumplings (HM) lemon drizzle cake (HM first time i've made it)

WED-carrot and parsnip soup (HM) bread (HM)

THURS-fish and chips FREE!:T (and you could say they are homemade as DB cooks them:rotfl: )

FRI-Chicken curry (chicken beast 1/2 price frozen section, MR S 4p curry sauce with added onion, boiled rice)

    SAT-pizza (HM)

SUN-BIG sunday roast dinner (mum and dad coming, its part of dads birthday prezzie!)

Breakfast is cereal, HM cinnamon and raisin bread or plain toast for me, DS and OH, DD goes to breakfast club which is only 75p a day:T (DD and DS start schoola t same time at different schools!)

lunches- packed lunch for DD and DS (sandwiches, fruit, yog and HM biccies or buns) same for OH and me apart from wednesday when bertie comes over to do shopping and we are ladies what lunch...yesterday HM soup, HM bread and HM lemon drizzle cake!
I think thats it, will sort out next weeks and post it later.

Thanks for the shiney sink suggestion have done that for the last 2 nights and it works:T

Children are...DD 6yrs and DS 7yrs, willbe getting them to keep their rooms tidy, its 1 less job for me, just got to make sure OH doesn't do it for them!

Have decided DS room first, it doesn't need stripping just painting, but the ceiling is dark blue and i'm changing it to white:eek: so next weekend we will clear the room and i can crack on with it  thats the plan anyway!

:T thanks everyone hopefully i'm all motivated now:rotfl: will be keeping you up to date as i've no doubt something will pop up bite me on the bum and it will be another week before i get going:rotfl:

Sorry to hear about your doggie. I understand how you feel, my step dad just had to have his little west highland put down, and we're all still in mourning for her. She'd been having good days and bad days for months, but I think you just know when you can't put it off any longer.

I've got a huge pile of things to do too, I've recently started back at college, and there just don't seem to be enough hours in the day! Trouble is, the flat is a pigsty, I've got 3 assignments to write, and my daughters school uniform all needs washing and ironing, since the cat found her way into the drawer, and spent a very comfortable night shedding fur all over everything - I would just give it all a good shake, but one of her class is severely allergic to cats, and I think I might be in trouble with the teacher!
Of course, whenever I sit down to do some college work, I feel guilty about the state of the house, and vice versa. It's just easier to sit on the computer!

Oh and we have made DS tidy up his art work (!) before he went to school, if we can keep that up its a big help!
