  • Are you sure?

I've had an Amex Gold card for the last 14 years, and it's never cost me more than £35 per year

Actually the annual fee is £95.

Maybe because you have been their customer for a while they reduced it to £35?

Do you get their points rewards?
  • still waiting... what a nightmare

    Hi

I used to have the Amex Gold card. I would say that the insurances are actually pretty poor (and usually covered by any good travel insurance anyway) and the other benefits only become worthy of the £95 if you use the card and travel a lot.

I got the card primarily for the 'preferred seating' benefit, but that proved to be pants too.

And you don't get lounge access with the Gold card, only the Platinum.

Although you could cancel out the first year's fee by using the 20,000 bonus membership reward points to get a £100 gift voucher for something you wanted anyway!

Not saying the card isn't for you, just make sure after the first year you get enough out of it to justify the annual fee.

It's true but the Platinum card you get the Priority Pass Card to use any airport lounge. It's not the card itself, right?
In few countries like Brazil and Qatar if you display only your AMEX Gold or Platinum card you can stay in the lounge for free. Furthermore, you can take a guess with you for free of charge without the need of any Priority Pass Card or Airport Angel. By the way, you pay £15 for guest using these airport lounge card.

Regarding insurance... I believe Amex is much better compared to some travel insurances out there.

Ex: New Year's Eve I flew to Dubai via Doha and my luggage got delayed over 30 hours. Barclays will cover a maximum of £150 and the Coop bank £100 and this is only valid after the 12 hours your luggage is delayed.

Amex would pay me up to £725 for 24h and more than 48h they would give an extra £1000! Note they start paying you after the first 6 hours instead 12h. (I can't believe I didn't get this card before I travel LOL )

But as you mentioned previously... I personally wouldn't pay £98 for their insurance but it's worth for me the bonuses points as it will give me free 2 return tickets from BA.

In few countries like Brazil and Qatar ( The ones I've been and seen so far ) any AMEX Gold card you can stay in the lounge for free without needing a Priority Pass Card or Airport Angel.

Do you have anything in writing about this, or is it just a discretionary thing?
    Gone ... or have I?

The AMEX Gold charge in Brazil you can use any airport lounge in Brazil only by displaying your card ( http://www2.americanexpress.com.br/conteudo/cartoespessoais/goldcard/viagem/sala_vip.aspx ) Sorry guys it's in portuguese.

When I stopped in Doha Airport and used my priority card for their lounge I saw the Amex gold charge and platinum logo and then I asked if I had an Amex gold charge card the lounge would be free and they said it would!

So... In some places around the word only by showing your amex gold/platinum card you can stay free of charge!

This is in Rio de Janeiro

But your card has been issued in the UK. You are not entitled to the same benefits.

    From one of your links:

The airport lounge access is available to American Express Basic and Supplementary Cardmembers of the Middle East-issued Platinum Card, American Express Gold Card, American Express Gold Credit Card and the American Express Corporate Card.

The benefits of the UK issued Gold card are included in the welcome pack.

If you do manage to blag your way in to any lounges be sure to let us know!
