SKY - leaving & coming back, new box

Can anyone help, I have had a hunt around in here but cant find an answer, I have been a SKY customer for about 2 years, my box is starting to play up and I think I am going to need a new one................if I cancel my subscription, how long would it be before I could return as a new customer and get a new box, or could my partner sign up for a new contract instead of me??

  • I think you can upgrade your box for free at the moment.

When we wanted to be a new customer, my partner opened the account in his name just in case.

yeah from what I can see, I can get a free SKY+HD box but that means having to spend an extra £10.25 a month and until I get myself a HD telly thats goin to be money I could spend elsewhere :(

Phone them up and ask to cancel. They will ask why,. tell them your box is playing up so there is no point subscribing.

They will offer to send an engineer for (I think) £70, Refuse, and say you still want to cancel. They will probably then knock it down to £35. Continue to refuse and they might just send a bloke for free, who will most probably change your box for free.

It is 12 months after cancelling before you are counted as a new customer. With a service call (even if you blag a free call which is normally £65 to fix anything and everything necessary) you are very likely to get a refurbished box and almost certainly if your present box is a Sky+ and not HD as they haven't been manufactured for over 18 months now. It is also very dependant on how much your present subscription is on how low they will go on the price for a service call or other deal by threatening to cancel - minimum sub very little chance and high sub very good chance.
