flight delay question

My Mum is currently stranded at Gatwick airport, I dropped her off this morning at 6am (I live near Birmingham), we checked Gatwick's departures online before we left which said her flight was schedueled so we figured that meant it was on time.
As I was arriving home I heard from my sister that my Mum had called and told her there would be no flights until tomorrow morning at the earliest...she also said there were no hotels within a 40 mile radius, so it doesn't sound like the airline are doing much for her.
I can't risk driving down again to pick her up as the roads are treacherous...especially the M25. Can anyone offer any advice? Are the airline obliged to find her a place to stay?

It'll be chaos, the chances of the airline practically helping her are very small, unless it is an airline with one or two flights.
Probably best to get on a train back to the west midlands.

Can you book a refundable hotel?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

If you can find somewhere with availability could I suggest you contact the hotel and ask to make a provisional booking, as by the time you get in touch with mum the availability could be gone? Even if you have to pay a small deposit it would be worth it to make sure she has somewhere to stay.
