  • With my grid reference made up of: KS871568, I have a theory and grid reference that just about might fit - Could you guys run the rule over it and report any discrepencies, mistakes and give opinions or disprove etc. Or better still your idea's of where it is.

    My suspicion is SK178685
Because a wall is shown running parallell with a path. and would run downhill off the the right. The picture shows a slight uphill gradient between the path and wall. While the map contours indicate the wall to run along the high point of a ridgeline,so maybe from where the photo was taken with the wall about 50m away - the slight uphill gradient might match? The buildings to the right of picture could be the buildings shown on the map labelled as Woodbine Farm?
Only downside is that the picture shows the wall about 50m ish from the path, but the map indicates the path should maybe run close together.
    Anyone got a better theory?
  • The description of the balloon journey is that they left Bakwell and headed over Monsal Head and Cressbrook nature reserve which is heading north. It describes landing just before a main road I think - the GR of SK178685 is quite a way south and is not near a busy main road. I can't see much detail in the photo as my computer seems to show photos on the web as quite blurry.

There's a referral to views over the highest point of the Derbyshire dales - not sure what that is?

Quite a tough challenge with little to go on! I need to try and get this right since some of my previous answers are missing or seem to be incorrect

Yes I suppose SK178685 does seem too far south of their mean direction and track. Another one that raises suspicion could be SK187586 for a couple of reasons, although some aspects might not seem to fit.
SK187586 would be just north of Gotham and about half km from A5012 (what constitutes a busy main road?)
There are a couple of un-named paths marked on the map, and a series of walls shown on the 1:25.000 scale map.
There is a path labelled as The Pennine Bridleway (also called High Peak Trail & Midshires Way further southeast), the path/track is also a dismantled railway. So the description of "only a couple of ruts in the field made the landing anything other than text book" - may be a cryptic reference to the ruts where the rail lines used to be? (Well who knows?).
So imagining yourelf by the path, looking towards the wall (where the streetmap arrow indicates as the grid reference). The uphill gradient between the path and wall fits OK. The terrain trending downhill sloping to the right fits OK. The buildings to the right of the picture in the dip could be Upperhouse Farm.
Also - they definately referred to "the ruts in the field." And I reckon that most peoples definition of a field would be an enclosure that's walled or fenced, and that's pretty much what is shown on the map.
What doesn't seem fit is that none of the other walls marked on the map appear in the picture - so I'm still not convinced.

Is anyone sure or confident of an answer yet?

Actually I am still confident the clue is in the name of the photograph of the balloon landing, perhaps a GPS coordinate!!

They embedded the solution to the first question in the name of a photograph.

So if anyone knows anything about conversion of GPS data to OS grid ref that may define the answer.

I don't think the number attached to the photo is the original name it is more likely just a reference number used by Facebook.

From the description of the flight the balloon is heading North and a bit to the West.

The landing site is near a busy main road and the only real candidate I can see for that is the A623.

From the possible grid locations only SK186 758, SK188 756 and SK168 758 are close to that road.

After Cressbrook both SK186 758 and SK188 756 would be slightly back to the East. In addition...

SK186 756 - Doesn't look like the smooth square field in the photo
SK188 758 - Doesn't seem to have any sign of the path and it is after the main road.

SK168 758 - Has the path and the wall and is just before the busy main road so looks favourite.

Pictures from Google Street View look promising as well.

This is the view at SK168-758 from the A623 where the path meets the main road.

    AlpkitSK.jpg

On the horizon, just to the right of centre, you have what looks like a line of trees with a break in the middle.

Just to right of that is what looks like another line of trees with a level section then two pointy bumps.

Both features match those seen on the photo of the landing site.

Yep I think you are right!
Was trying to find some cofirmation prior to submitting, but I think your answer is about right.

Does look promising, just had a look on recordlrc website.
