C/H thermostat never reaches above 18 degrees

Hi all, have had a new condensing boiler and a couple of mew rads fitted in the last few months but this has been going on for ever!

The thermostat for heating in just behind front door. you know when you turn it and it clicks when it reaches the room temp? well even if i swung it all around to 30 degrees and put th heating on continuos the thermostat click never seems to get above 18 degrees. have put thermostats in rooms and this verifies that.

WhenI had new boiler i didnt replace timer/ thermostat as man said they are working properly . Any ideas on what may be going on?

also related problem in that even though i had system flushed out my rads never got hot enough so you cant touch them even when heating is on all day the house is still cold- hmmm looking as i have written it could be the same problem? the spare bedroom is so cold even though the (admittedly) small rad is on. None of the rads have tvr's on even though plumber said i really should have them all fitted. my reason was that i feel cold so much i want them all on and not turned down.

AFAICS, there is no problem with your thermostats or timer. The problem is simply that not enough heat is reaching your radiators. You could try turning the pump up. Also check to see whether there are just 1 or 2 rads which are reaching the right temperature.

  • We have a similar problem had a brand new boiler fitted last year cost over 5k all in all, the thermostat is fitted in the hallway it is one of those new wireless ones. The hallway is by far the draftiest place in the house so we can never achieve the cost saving low temp setting and leaving the heating on constant. After it has been on a few hours the rest of the house is sweltering but because it cannot bring the hallway up to temprature it never switches off!

I really need to move the thermostat to another room maybe the living room might be a better idea I cant understand why heating engineers insist on fitting them in the coldest draftiest part of most peoples houses I understand the logic but there is no way to avhieve a constant sensible temprature throughout the whole house.

Maybe my hallway is a bit draftier than the norm it is always freezing cold hallway, stairs and landing never really gets warm ad that is with a big radiator in the hallway and a smaller one on the landing............

Have great loft insulation and also cavity wall insulation all that has brought me is something I never had before condensation!!!!

Sounds as if the radiators are too small. They need checking for size.

Any size new boiler won't make the slightest bit of difference if the radiators cant transfer enough heat to the room.

and size as in BTUs rather than length x width.

Underpressure what do you set the thermostat at? i have mine set at 14-15c because the hall is cold but the rest of the house warms up fine to around 18c.

If they were bigger, they wouldn't be warmer - OP reports rads are not hot enough

This was my first thought. The radiators cannot get any hotter than the water being fed to them.

Turn the boiler thermostat up a notch or two and see if that makes a difference.

In this weather should be 75 deg C IMHO.
But is the boiler fired up all the time ? with the room stat set at say 20-21 if you are not reaching that temperature but the boiler is cutting in and out, it suggests the circulating pump is not moving the water round the system fast enough, it might be as simple as adjusting the pump speed up a notch. This is all assuming you have no air in the radiators, the symptom of this would be the radiator was cold at the top but hot lower down , in which case vent them .
