Hello,
I'am new to these boards.
I try and save on my Electric with all prices going up.
Thought I would pass on this tip.
To make an energy efficient cuppa, if you can't afford some of the latest kettles try this.
This is for 2 cups of tea or coffee.
1. Put 3/4 cup of water into an empty kettle and boil. Make sure water covers elements. Make tea or coffee as usual in mugs,(half water in each mug with tea bag).
2. Put another 3/4 cup of water in kettle, turn switch on, till your hear it start making a warming up noise. Turn off kettle and add to mugs. Add milk.
Tea or coffee will be ready to drink. A quicker and energy saving way. When we think how many cups of tea and coffee are made everyday. It will help with the bills.

Here's a quick question.
Which is more energy efficient, an electric kettle or a kettle on a gas hob?0 -
I have found using my original instructions I've saved on Electric.
Found this about Electric verses Gas Hob
Techmind gas electricity0 -

Cost is surely down to the difference between gas and electric prices someone is paying? Electric can often be 3-4 times more expensive per kWh than gas however, so I'd be tempted to suspect that even with more energy being lost to the surrounding room when using it, gas is cheaper to boil water than electric.
As for efficiency, at the point of use electric is best, but when you take in to account energy lost at the power plant and in the wires to the house, electric is very wasteful and will not compare so favourably when you look at the total picture.
For me the main issue is that the electric kettle is much faster. I'm also strangely heat retardant and also like to drink my coffee straight after pouring it while it's very hot. However, if you're making instant coffee and you prefer it cooler, there's no real reason to boil water to make it then wait for it to cool. With instant you're just adding the water back to coffee that someone else has already made, so it's fine to add it at whatever temperature you plan to drink it. Fresh coffee and tea require hot water though for good results I've found.0 -
87 degrees celcius is the perfect temp for making coffee.
Putting your kettle on twice as often is going to wear it out more quickly, meaning you need another manufacture of steel, plastic etc.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I've been using my microwave for years.
Note: DO NOT heat up a cup of water and then add your coffee and sugar!! It can spit very hot water at you.
Instead, try this...
Fill your cup or mug with the required amount of cold water - making an allowance for adding milk if you use it.
Now add your coffee, sugar and milk to taste and stir well.
Pop it in the microwave and (for a mug) give it one minute on high. Take it out and test to see if it's at a suitable drinking temperature; though it will almost certainly be too cool.
If it's too cool pop it back in and give it another ten seconds. Test.
Repeat until your coffee is at the perfect temperature :-)
Then make a note of how much time in total that you needed.
Next time - just set the microwave to run for that total time.
I've got two sizes of coffee mug. One is just right after one minute and forty seconds and the other is perfect at one minute thirty. Microwaves use less power per minute than a kettle and depending on power ratings are pretty much just as quick. Plus - you only heat the exact amount of water that you need.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I just use my coffee machine, the type that drips through into a jug on a hot plate. Dont think it costs much to keep a jug of coffee heated for a couple of hours?“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I know someone who makes up a large flask of coffee at WORK and brings it home.
It's stealing, but maybe his boss knows.0 -
If you can see or hear the water bubbling switch it off, Saves electricity. Usually its too hot to drink anyway.
I bet it saves more electricity than the boiling 3/4 then add a bit more method.
Or learn to like cold tea? Big savings to be had. Drink tap water only to save even more.
Sorry top drag up a month old post but some peoples ideas of eco/green energy saving amazes me.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
