  • I am going to take him in the morning :( but I think his teeth may have gotten overgrown & that has added to his health problems.

The gerbils were from Pets At Home adoption centre & they were approx 2yrs old. I have cared for them since August last year. When they came home, they wern't as tame as gerbils who had human contact from being very little. None of them liked being handled & preferred to just got on with their own thing. The only time I really handled them was during their weekly clean out when I put them in a hamster ball to run about whilst the cage was being cleaned.
I did try were possible to check their scent gland, but was very difficult to check their teeth due to the fact they got really stressed if handled for too long.

I'm still not sure the ill gerbils' teeth are overgrown, I guess I'm just trying to find answers to why he has taken so ill.
  • Sadly he passed away late this evening.

Many thanks for all the sensitive and caring replies, they were much appreciated.

Sorry to hear that, but don't beat yourself up looking for a reason. It may have just simply been old age,or you don't know what sort of life he had before you got him.The important thing is that he had a good life with you.

I am so sorry on the passing of your pet.Look back on the good times & joy he gave you.
    RIP Little fella.
  • Today, I noticed one of my remaining gerbils has a scent gland tumor. He must have been itching it as it was bleeding.

I attempted to clean it & have called the vets to ask for some advice. Because of his old age, I'm concerned whether it's worth operating or the worst :(

Waiting for a return telephone call.
  • Oh god fingers crossed for you. x
