We ended up having the window removed (about £200)

    £200????!!!!!!!!

My next door neighbour had the same problem over the weekend. I removed the internal beading of their UPVC window (using a thin wallpaper scraper). The glass unit was then lifted out, the sofa passd through and the glass was refitted. Took us no time at all.

You just need 2 people asthe glass and sofa are heavy items.

It was a panelled bay window. The entire unit had to be removed to allow the couch through (not just the glass). I wouldn't have been happy for a neighbour to have done it ;)

    How do you do this?

And how do you refit it securely?

Take a window frame out, if you can. Much easier than you would think.

  • Wife and I were looking at a 3 piece from Land of Leather. Salesman said £50 delivery, and that included taking apart the 3-seat sofa, and re-assembling it.

But... if the 2-seat sofa didn't fit and had to be taken apart then that would be £80 extra into the pockets of the delivery guys!

I (half) jokingly said to the salesman that I'd rather stick needles in my eyes. He sympathised and showed how to dismantle it by removing the staples and a couple of coach bolts. Takes 10 minutes!

Had a similar problem myself on friday. Gorgeous new leather sofas arrived, I had measured the doors so i was fairly confident. 2 seater flew in no problems, 3 seater flew through the front door but because of the position of the living room door near to the stairs we couldnt turn it.

Nice DFS man suggested taking out the living room window......we are on the first floor! haha. i figured that by removing the 2 plank rails from the bannisters it would give us just enough room to manouver. A quick call to my joiner father in law and it was in. He even managed to make the plank rails screw on and off for the future.

DFS man did show us the underside coach bolts and explain we could take it apart, but he pointed out that this does invalidate the warranty.

Im sure sofas are getting bigger...not had this problem with any of our previous ones and its a 1970's house!!

Dont think you could say that the sofas are being made to big as much as our tastes are for large sofas and people arent measuring up correctly.

I think also UPVC doors make doorways narrower for getting things in and out. I think people choose bigger sofas for comfort and so on.

  • but a lot of new properties seem to be built with wide doorways on ground floor for disabled access I assume - light switches are lower too

our doorways downstairs in this house built 2004 are significantly wider than our last house built 1997

  • Modular sofas are a wonderful thing! Me and OH have just bought our first flat, and we want a big U-shaped sofa, modular is the only way we'll be able to get it through the door! :j
