Arghhh sofa doesn't fit

Ok so i understand it's not the companies fault, but i wanna scream.

Bf and i bought our 1st house, ordered our dream sofa 11 weeks ago. I sat in our empty house reading waiting for it to be delivered today, so excited when the truck pulled up. Only to be disappointed, it wouldn't fit in through the front door or back. Well actually it did make it pass the door and into the house, but no further, the inside doors were too narrow. Company said if only you didn't have that poky out bit of wall it would go through.

Im so annoyed and also a bit scared. It took 11 weeks to make, we only have 2 1/2 to be out of our rental property (thats fully funished). Delivery guys said don't worry, go back to the store and re order, we'll tell them whats happened, but i cant see us having a sofa ready when we HAVE to move out.

Stupid doors.....

Take a window frame out, if you can. Much easier than you would think.

I'd be very surprised if you could just take it back and reorder.

We had exactly the same thing happen to us. On the order form there was a disclaimer stating that it's the customer's responsibility to ensure that the furniture will fit inside the property. The shop at the time (Allders) didn't want to know. We've also had MSE'rs here who have had the same problem (athough I can't remember the outcome).

We ended up having the window removed (about £200) and refitted. We had to repeat the process when we moved out.

If they do let you reorder, then good luck and just think, it could have been worse!

I ,without realising, ordered a tumble dryer that wouldnt fit through a narrow interior doorway of our old house(are old houses much worse for this?)I later found a place for it in an understairs cupboard,.When i ordered a new freezer i had to track down a very narrow one.I didnt send the tumbledrier back cos i dont think you can get narrow ones.I think it may be more difficult to return an item thats been specially made, but if it hasnt and they wont budge on a refund ,perhaps you could agree less money back so they could re-sell it?Cant think of anything else.
  • looks like the window option is the way to go

  • We had to take our sofa to bits to get it in the livingroom. It went back together okay because 2 years on its still solid.

You may need a specialist remover. When DW moved a few years ago, had problems fitting a bed settee into her new house. The removal men's solution - lashing two ropes around it they dragged it over the back wall, removed a window frame and put it in the lounge that way (pefectly undamaged) while all I could do was gasp in admiration.

  • We ordered a Sofa from DFS, when we ordered it, we thought it might not go through, but they saiid, oh it's ok, it comes apart, 8 weeks later, when it was delivered. It would not fit through and did not come apart!

So we had to go back and choose another one and are now waiting another 8 weeks for it to arrive.

In the meantime though they've lent us a sofa.
  • Small world, this happened to me today, 1880's house.

Fortunately we're buying from a local outfit ex-stock.

Got to visit showroom tomorrow to pick out a different one, for delivery tomorrow !
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

Have to say that I have never heard of a sofa that doesnt come apart - in most cases you remove the material from under the sofa and there will be a number of coach bolts which hold the thing together. Of cause if they are allowing you to return it free of charge (which would be unusual) then it probably isnt worth trying as they may not accept it back after you have "damaged" the underside (though the material is normally just held on with staples so if you have a staple gun it isnt hard to reattach
