Huge hike in Insurance Premium

Options
My car insurance is due for renewal at the end of December. I'm a 43 yr old woman driving a Citroen Saxo and was paying around £220 a year, third party fire & theft, with windscreen, legal and breakdown cover. I've just been given my renewal quote - £750 !! I have 7 yrs no claims bonus and no previous convictions, driving or otherwise. My insurers recommended me to go online and shop around as they couldn't offer me anything competitive, although she warned me this was happening across the board.

I've been online and the cheapest I can find is around £550. I wasn't happy about this, but figured that as my insurer said it was happening industry-wide that that may be the best I could get. However, my Mum's insurance is also due at the end of the year, so she went online too to see what it came up with. She's had several quotes around what she's paying now (around the £200 mark) and some even cheaper. So industry-wide it ain't, but am I going to be able to get mine any cheaper?

Any thoughts, please advise

Well you need to find out what has made the premium go up....

    Any accidents? fault or non-fault?

Add your mum as an additional driver when you get a quote.

Insurance seems to be a bit of a lottery so the more quotes you get, the better chance you have of getting a good deal.
  • Hi, I know this might sound daft but have you tried changing your cover to fully comp sometimes this actually lowers premiums.
  • I've had a lot of quotes now. Somebody told me to go on Aviva and Direct Line because they're not on the comparison websites - and they were far dearer! I've had no accidents, fault or no-fault. And I've had a play about with the quotes - breakdown cover or none, third party or fully comp, no excess or up to £400 excess. I've messed about with all the variables and can't budge it under £550.

I guess my point was....has insurance really gone up so much (which my Mum kind of disproves) or is there anything I can do?

I would guess that the area where you live has been downgraded by the insurers, the only thing to do is get quotes from everyone you can find, hopefully one company will not load your area as bad. Bradford is rated really badly by 95% of insures but Aviva still has it as OK, My renewal was £670 with Admiral but just over £300 with Aviva, Our Saab was £580 with Saga who have always been cheap until this year, Aviva did it for £249.
It is all down to the area where you live, if it is a low postcode you are classes as inner city and prices go up.

I have to admit, I am in a bad area. Guess I was just flummoxed because this hasn't changed in 5 yrs and they've been happy to take my premiums until now. (Pi**ed off because my Mum takes every opportunity I can to run down where I'm living but looks like she might be right on this one). I went onto Aviva and they quoted me £879 - yeek! Cheapest I've found is Kwik Fit, £600 a yr if I want the breakdown cover. Guess I'm stuck with that - or move house

My renewal came up more than before ( I go though a broker).

went online used quidco comparison for cash back offers.
    http://www.quidco.com/insurance-finance/insurance/car/

Found the same insurance cheaper with another broker old one undercut so kept the business and cheaper than last year. < £200 fully comp OK area 12yo pug 306.

Try fully comp and take all the extras out some of those might be cheaper elsewhere(ok done that)

Have you tried a different location just to see if really is that?

You could try an insurance broker, they have access to policies you don't, have you tried with a different car, they consider it boy racer car now, and maybe change the car, a bit extreme I know.

And ask your neighbours to see who they have gone with.
Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

This just happened to my daughter, her insurance is due end of December too, and her insurance has doubled, she has had no claims, she asked why and was told the same, all insurances are going up.
When you think about it they have you cornered really, to be legal you need insurance so they charge what they like.
  • fully comp is normally cheaper than tpft normally buy about £200 for me

insurance companies just make it up
i insured an astra 2 litre turbo fully comp for £300 group 18 car as it shouldnt have that engine in it so it modified.
I took it off the road to insure a old 250k mile audi for the winter and they wanted £980 for the old audi. i cancelled the policy lost 6 months insurance and went with admiral for £190 - A money saving expert saving of £790

looks like you have fallen victim to the random price generator
