Salt gritter chipped my windscreen - what to do?

I wouldn't have thought you'd have any sort of valid claim at all against the gritter. After all, if a car/truck/bus flicked up a stone from the road and it cracked your screen then you wouldn't be chasing it for them to pay out.
When you say chips, do you mean tiny little chips, about the size of a matchstick head or bigger ones? If as I suspect they're smaller than a matchstick head, these cannot be repaired by Autoglass. Don't bother with the kits you buy as a I have tried using 2 types of 'pit fill' kit - Crackattack and Esprit. Both totally useless. The only solution is a new windscreen.
It depends how much they bother you and where on the screen they are. If they're only tiny and not in your line of sight then just leave them. Dont believe the scaremongers here that they will get worse and crack. They most likely wont.0 -

It's all very well people saying there's nothing you can do but what if you were a cyclist? You could have been blinded or seriously hurt.
And what if it had been a child! :eek:0 -

Pouring hot water (boiling?) on to a glass windscreen is just plain dumb. It's quite likely to damage or crack through stress. De-icing spray is cheap and works fine. Or hot air blowers in car.
Chips should be fixed if possible, they can get worse over time and cause the screen to delaminate. Salt in mixture also not good for health of steel.0 -
Cyclists? Motorcycles? You need to pull back from gritters, they are very painful and possibly you could get a bit in the eye. Although I might doubt the wisdom of cycling on a night when the gritters were out anyway. Also gritters are more aggressive in gritting on dual carriageways than they are in towns where they don't shower the pavements. (At least not here they don't.)0

Just one of those things, most insurance will repair with little / no cost and no effect on your no-claims.0
