Salt gritter chipped my windscreen - what to do?

Driving up a hill yesterday, and a salt gritter was driving down. I was doing around 30mph, and it was probably doing more.

It sprayed grit all over my car and windscreen, and now I see a few small chips on the windscreen. Anything suggestions as to what I can do?

absolutely nothing unless you can prove it.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Nothing you can do, it surely would be better having a chip on the screen then end up in a ditch

One of the auto windscreen place might be able to repair the screen sometimes you can get it done for free on comp insurance
  • Annoying eh? But I'd get your windscreen mended as quickly as possible - so the chips dont turn into cracks. If you are fully comp it will probably be for free. Ring insurance co to find out?

Call RAC Auto Windscreens/Autoglass/a local glass fitter?
  • Chips turn into cracks, like what everybody else said get it fixed now, most repairs will be done for free under you car insurance. Else if it does crack you could end up paying out your excess to get it replaced.

Assuming the griiter had yellow beacons flashing and a sign saying something like "Caution Gritting In Progress" there is not a lot you can do.

If the chips are no more than minor scratches, then jewellers paste/polish will take them out.

If the pitting is minor then you can buy a repair kit similar to this

You may find your insurance covers you but check if it counts as a claim for no claims bonus loss.

It could have been worse, many people find their radiators get holed.

Personally I would never overtake a gritter, windscreens, radiators and paintwork all suffer.
  • "If the pitting is minor then you can buy a repair kit similar to this" You quite rightly state minor but I would just add that polishing out too much and too deep is likely to leave a distorted area on the screen. I've seen the result!:o

The OP said that he was travelling in the opposite direction to the gritter, not overtaking it!
