Sky free line rental deal over - what now?

Hi, for the last year I've had a great deal with Sky:

Sky TV - basic TV package (2 mixes)
Internet - 16mb - Max
Free Line Rental
£5/month all calls to UK landlines

Tot: £39.50/month

I don't use the phone very much, but for only £5 it ends up worthwhile.

Now, the contract is over, Sky have reverted back to charging me the £11 line rental, which is obviously a hard hit to suddenly take (£51.50/month now! Ouch!).

I guess my only option here is to threaten to cancel and see what happens...

If I do cancel, and go for the cheapest option with fastest broadband, it'd probably work out like this:

Line rental: £8/month - Primus
Freeview box: old sky box
New router: £15(?) - may not have to be purchased
Internet: £10/month - Sky (20mb) unlimited

Let's suppose I spend £10/month on calls. Overall cost for service would be approx: £28/month give or take. So obviously that's a big saving. I'd lose a few TV channels but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I'd actually just prefer to stick with my previous Sky deal as it would save some hassle, but it's just a bit much...

If you think you'll be spending £10 on calls then imo it's worth checking call packages and / or services such as 1899 or 18855 which should save money. If you are no longer a Sky customer I thik they charge more than £10 so check that too.

Sky boxes aren't Freeview boxes either - you'd need a FreeSat from Sky card to use it which costs a one-off fee too and has to be renewed periodically (I think).
  • I just plucked the figure out of the air really. I previously had the sky talk unlimited for £5/month. Including other calls I made, the total usually came to about £7. So, I guessed £10 just to make sure i.e. it won't be more...anyways, thanks for the tips for those cheap call rate nos. - I already use one for mobiles - Discount Dial - which charges 7p/min, which I think saves me 2-3p/min for each call.

I do use Sky for Eurosport, and a few other channels - Ch200, FX, Bravo etc - I guess I'll just have to find those shows elsewhere - :D

Sky broadband unlimited without a Sky TV sub is £15/month.
    Line rental extra.
If you are with Sky for Talk and broadband then you can't move to another ISP without first going back to BT.
Its worth checking what this might cost you.

AFAIK so long as the dish and receiver are yours to keep, it's a £25 fee for a Freesat card and no annual fee.
Much more than that and I'd just go for a separate Freesat receiver, which definitely has no fee.

Yes there's no annual fee but at least once in the past you had to replace the card which wasn't free for everybody. They may do the same again so to my mind FreeView or genuine FreeSat may be a better option.
