hi all

Options
Just after a little advice really i had a premature daughter 4 month ago born at 31 weeks 2 days gestation due to suffering from iugr anyway long story short she spend 2 and a half month in hospital and is now at home on 0.2litres of oxygen i have 2 other children both of whom are ok and a husband who works full time i have applied for dla as the nurses gave me an information pack upon my dishcharge from the hospital with my daughter and im pleased to see ive been awarded full benefit not sure if thats the right wording???
This will pay of debts we amassed over the 5 months when we had to go to hospital everyday for scans 30 miles from home and then when she was born.
im in debt of 700 with rent as the discretionary housing payment said they would help pay my rent whilst i was in hospital with my daughter but then after taking 3 months to make a decision told us that basically the travelling to hospital twice per day wasnt neccessary so if we only went half as much we could have paid the rent :s
everyone has there own opinion about htat bit.
they also told me that i couldnt appeal as theres no set rules about this type of payment and thats it basically..i owe lots and lots out to be honest so im jsut wondering if theres anyother help out htere for us as a family to try and get htese debts down weve been thru hell these last few months and its not getting any easier...ive applied for grants through social security but because we dont get any benefits as my husband works low wage we were refused not sure if this changed now that we get dla ..have been getting dla for past 2 weeks as had to wait till daughter was 3 months old before claiming any help and or advice anyone can give please do thanks alot xxx

As well as getting help from the debt-free thread to reduce outgoings and pay off debts, ask for an appointment with the Welfare Advisory Service at your local council. They will look at your situation as a whole and help with applying for anything you are entitled to.

    Best wishes for your baby.

  • Congratulations on the birth of your baby - my friend's daughter came home on oxygen after a premature delivery (26 weeks ). Although she has other disabilities, she has not had any problems with her breathing since she was about a year old. She is now twelve, and gets no more colds than anybody else. I hope your little one grows to have a similarly strong constitution.

You may want to contact your local carer's centre for advice and support. Mine is invaluable. They can also signpost you to additional help if it is needed.

Also, you might be interested in the Family Fund. I don't know whether you will meet the criteria, but if you don't look, you will never know :p
  • already in touch with family fund ty do you no if i have to let child tax no that im getting dla and will it affect my present claim:s

You do need to inform tax credits, yes. If you inform them, you may (subject to income) get disability premiums.

  • DLA shouldn't affect your rent.

OP when you say full benefit do you mean high rate care? If so are you claiming carer's allowance?
