My KWh for Elec and Gas - What do you think?

Hi Guys/Gals...

Finally started to get a real grip on trying to save money on Gas and Electric. I've done some analysis on my usage and costs from Powergen. A few questions I hope you can all help with and hopefully provide info for others too.... I need to know if we are average or do I need to crack the whip!

1. My Elec Kwh for this last year was 9654kwh and my Gas was 9086kwh - Would you say this was average? (Poll attached...)

2. My Prices from Powergen are:

Elec Top rate = 14.22p/kwh Low rate = 8.82p/kwh
Gas Top rate = 3.006p/kwh Low rate = 2.39p/kwh

How does this compare with everybody elses prices? If you have better, who's it with and where are you geographically

BASIC HOUSEHOLD INFO

3 bed semi in Cumbria
10 year old Combi Boiler
10kw shower
Washing machine (never bloody off!)
Gas Range cooker - average use.
Dryer (limked to washing machine use..)
4 adults (2 are 'non bill paying' 19 and 21yrs old, grrrr!)
All lights have Energy Saving bulbs in.
2 x 500W security lights on sensors for minimum time. (planning to change to 150W)
Elec bill over the last year was 841.88 and Gas 215.45

What strikes me as strange is that our gas bill is so very low (1/4) compared to the Electricity bill - is this normal?

If anyone knows of a site that lists all current pence per kwh for all power companies rather than the comparison sites - this would be useful...

Looking forward to lots of figures coming in from all...

Thanks!

Paul

    Hi Paul,

The figures the power companies use for 'average' consumption are 20,500 kwh for gas and 3,300 kwh for electricity.
  • Thanks Tripled,

Kinda sends my figures way out, allthough they are correct...

    Paul
  • mine are close to the average - 18000kwh gas and 3000kwh electricity -this is with the house populated all day so heating is on most of day along with tv etc. - this is with gas condensing combi, energy saving bulbs etc. - your gas usage seems low and electricity usage high (prob due to tumble dryer on alot)

Low user here, Cumbria. 1500 electric (4.03p E7 and 10.99p Day rate (Norfolk)and 13000 Gas. (price 2.55p) Both EBICO.
The parameters for the poll seem odd.

Something seems wrong with your figures.

9,0086 kWh to heat a 3 bed house in Cumbria and cook with gas for 4 adults seems far too low.

That is exactly what I was thinking but the annual cost matches the kWh figure given for gas. Other than the words "Combi Boiler", I see no mention of central heating, so is the gas used just for hot water and cooking?

9654kWh for electricity seems very high - particularly since it doesn't include heating. For a 3 bed semi with 2 adults who are at home all day my consumption last year was 2635kWh.

You've reminded me that I really must switch away from British Gas who on the bill I received yesterday charged me

    Gas Top rate = 4.959p/kWh Low rate = 4.412p/kWh
