made a pot of broth, but its missing something :(
does anyone have a good veg broth recipe?
I used a veg pack from tesco as i knew i wouldnt be bothered chopping the veg, a lot of broth (steeped) roughly a tablespoon of paprika, some salt n peper and mixed herbs, 2 chicken stock cubes and a veg one, covered with boiling water, lid on and boiled for a good while and then left to simmer for ages....
I didnt have any meat defrosted, but im thinking of adding the cubed chicken i have (cook it first obviously lol)

can u post your recipes or direct me to one please, would be great

another nsd for me weehee :)

Also, has anyone made salt and peper bread?
Ive never made bread before, but i really want to make this, as its only me who likes it and i hate paying £1.10 for it to go to waste

We love swede, have you tried mashing it half and half with carrot and a little butter & black pepper?
Or mash with potato. Or just add to veggie soup.
    Hth.

It's not that I don't like it but I have 8 portions in the freezer already mashed and was looking forward to the celeriac which is something I haven't had in a while. That's the only thing with getting a weekly box, things can get a bit repetitive.

Hippeechiq - Your not the only young one (I'm 40) who likes a glass of sherry at Christmas. I'm a croft girl too, one bottle lasts me years though:D

I know I'm probably pretty much alone in loving the snow, but we finally had some yesterday, and I love it! - where's a cartwheeling smiley when you want one? :j

.........I know it's associated with old dears, but I do and always have, loved Sherry.

Yes! I think you are the only one enjoying the snow...:(
As for sherry - I don't like this, but I do like Port (taste acquired from a trip to Lisbon) and I'm 27 :o

Well, although I don't feel it, am told I don't look it, and I'm not at all sure when it happened, but apparently.....:shhh: ...I'm 51  .......so maybe I fall into the "old dear" category now :rotfl:

In my head, I am, and am sure I always will be, in my late twenties early thirties, and that's where I'm staying!

Grow old disgracefully - that's my motto :D

Port and Brandy Nick......now there's a drink to keep you warm in the snow ;)

XSpender, I think I may stick to my Cr0ft, but also buy the cheapie one from £idls to see what it's like. I can always put it into a trifle, or a sherried (is that a word?) date and walnut loaf.

I'd like to get it tomorrow, but I've got a lot to get, and it's all on foot, and I already want to take advantage of the "Buy 6 Bottles Of Wine Get £2 Off" deal £idl's are doing, which I don't think for one minute will fit in my backpack! Lol

Mm, I like a sherry too (hic!) and my elderly neighbour kindly gives me one from time to time if he and OH are having a wee dram.

Russetred, I think we must be in the same small green square and my lot are also grumbling that their school is open too, in fact we had rain today although am a bit anxious it will freeze tonight as have to fetch the teens from youth club Christmas party at around midnight!

Spent £67.73 today on my weekly shop  but it did include some Christmas food and drink treats (which I have either frozen or hidden!) and I now have a fairly well stocked store cupboard and packed-to-the-gunwales freezer - small upright one - so hopefully can have a few NSDs now.

Can you freeze double cream as it is or do you have to whip it first and open freeze it in dollops, er, I mean beautifully piped swirls? :) Thanks.

I made it to MrT after the hospital so was very pleased about that lol.

Our MrT had plenty of everything and none of the shelves were empty which was good. Didnt see anyone panic buyer either. They did have a lot of whoopsies but didnt really get the chance to rummage as the woman putting it out was in the way with others loitering and cant be doing with being barged whilst pregnant! The car park was a nightmare though and I am surprised we didnt get stuck!

I have a breadmaker but only me and DH eat it, like the other lady above said my little ones dont eat it as they dont like it!

Hope everyone else has managed to get what they need from their shops and stays safe in the snow and ice.

Hippeechiq I am hoping the Slimfast goes half price in the new year.

Last year I bought about six months worth from Tesco when it was on offer.

I shall keep some money especially to buy it. Last year it went to £3.00 per tin.

My ds takes it to work as he works very early morning shifts and does not fancy eating.

He takes 3 meals worth per day so a tin works out enough for 4 days.

I would love to join you ladies. I will aim for £250 per month initially.

I am a terrible bulk buyer but it has served me well as we have loads of flour, UHT milk, a freezer full of stuff and loads of tins. I am currently making a mixed wholemeal/white/seedy loaf in my Panasonic.

So that is £250 for 3 adults plus a cat and two rabbits, but I buy their food in bulk.

does anyone have a good veg broth recipe?

I've just made a really gorgeous thick soup with a leek, carrots, sweet potato, new potatoes, lentils, yellow split peas, a veg stock cube and a packet of Pea soup (bought from either app F00ds or Big Br*nds can't remember but it was pennies) I made up some Garlic D0ugh Balls to go with it and it was lush. :j The leek and carrots were on the turn so I feel very virtuous :A

Over the last month I decided that I really do need to support our local and only independant Green grocer and seemed to have managed a bit of a routine. I drop in on a Friday morning, list off everything I want, leave him with a £20 note and he delivers it all for me foc on a Friday evening - tonights came in a lined veg box and looked really lovely. Just like buying a posh organic box :j

For £18.94 I bought Lettuce, Cucumber, Toms, Red Pepper, 1kg Carrots, Veg Broth Mix, 10 Satsumas, 1lb grapes, Bananas, Apples, 15lb Linc Potatoes, 3 cooking apples, a large leek, 1lb onions, mushrooms, sprouts and a packet of eat me dates - which I thought was really good value!

I've just made up a trifle which I also got from AF/BB. it's year's since I've had chocolate custard!

I've just swapped my MrT clubcard points for a designer watch for my son for Christmas, his main present for free :T :j

I'm not really sure to be honest - I'd do a shop once a week which was always around 80 - 100€ :o and I guess 'top-ups' of about 20-30€ :o But no idea really :( Yikes that's sooo bad :o

Oh, don't say that :D I'd say it's what "most" people probably spend without any problem. I know I spend it easily if I don't meal plan. I'm having a bit of an uphill struggle at the moment because DS is out 3 or 4 nights per week but is MR FUSSY when he is at home (and also Mr Locust); DH gets panicky if he can't reach into a cupboard and take out instant, satisfying food, and DD is now a vegetarian. So it used to be a whole lot easier, one meal for everyone and a selection of HM snacks - these now don't get eaten, so I don't make 'em any more with the result that I get cries of "why isn't there any FOOD in the house?" Once DS goes to university, I think things will actually be easier as DH and I will eat veggie (or semi-veggie) so I won't be cooking to try and please totally divergent tastes.

Anyway, that's just me moaning. You have done BRILLIANTLY - and you have so much nicer food in France, so I'm sure you're getting much better/more nutritious stuff for the money. Well done you!!!
  • Spent £10.27 yesterday in Mr M on butter, tinned toms, cannellini beans and some veggies. Had a NSD today and hopefully shouldn't need to buy anything over the weekend.
