Chains or winter tyres?

used chains for the first time today and went pretty good. Even stuck to the snowed up back roads as the main road was jammed of traffic, but nothing on the back roads, except stuck cars which I drove around anyway.
I suppose the back end could step out if you were going a bit fast or jammed the brakes on too hard, but up and down hills around Huddersfield and not really a problem at all, quite happy with em actually. doddle to go on, in about 5 minutes for both front wheels.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
Get winter tyres. You can't run on chain over normal roads. With longer winter each year, it makes senses to invest in decent sets of winter tyres.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0

Winter tyres would be good but even then its worth having a set of chains just in case things get really bad.0

Although winter tyres are an initial expense, they give me peace of mind for 3 months of the year. They work better at temp below 7 degrees so it isnt just for snow.
250 for 4 reasonably large tyres inc fitting.
i have a mechanic that will swop them over for 20 for all 4 wheels.
Yes it is expense but i dont lose money not going to work uposetting boss etc. hopefully the better grip will avoid an ins claim as well i will never know that but as the excess is 250 it would have paid for itself in 1 second!!!
And my other tyres arent being worn down in the garage for those 3 months so eventually it should all balance out.0 -

Except for when you claim for being rear ended by the range rover behind you that's running on something stupid 285/10/26 summer tyres and thinks if you can drive there then so can he because he has a 4x4.
If anyone cares, mytyres.co.uk still have Nokian WR-G2s in stock (just called them to check my size, call yourself to check your own) though they are overpriced. Nobody else has them though.
e: For a laugh I called Kwik Fit to ask about the Nokian's. They offered me the number for the Carphone Warehouse next door.0 -
If the c**k in the RR rear ends you then claim your excess off them, not always possible with uninsured knobs but most of us have insurance, only a few have winter tyres.0

Thank you, I will have a look at this!!
For some reason the search function on Amazon does not work very well for this product. You might be able to source them on eBay.

you can get TYRE SOCKS, which help a lot in the snow... like snow chains but easy to just keep in the boot of the car when you get stuck and put them on!... They dont last long, and are reasonably expensive, but could really get you out of trouble!Plan

To be honest I would forget about the autosocks, I bought 2 sets last year had one set on once last year and then 2 times this week and they are worn out large holes in them and their effectiveness didnt work. Second pair I used yesterday and today and they are also just about worn out and thats driving around side streets and going slow. These came at a cost of £60 each set.
I have now ordered a set of snow chains very easy to put on and at a cost of £125 including express postage. both are only to be used on snow and if you get stuck so think I would rather pay my money for the snow chains as they are not going to wear out after several uses.
I also have snow tyres on which I bought 3 years ago but now chains are also neccesary if you get stuck.Look after the pennys and the pounds will look after themselves:money:0
