I moved into a new house 15 years ago with a meter and it was situated in a deep pit half way up the road. There was no way I could get the lid off the pit to read the meter. As it was a new build they had a choice where to put the meters and yet they chose to put them where nobody could get at them. I think they should be alongside the gas and electric meters immediately outside the property.

They can only be along the line of the water main to your house, they're hardly going to reroute the main just to bring the meter nearer to your door.
A sturdy screwdriver is usually sufficient to raise the hinged inspection cover.

Screwdriver is what we used in the previous place (rented coach house, meter in the path). Just lifted the plate, and took the meter readings to submit to water company when moving out.

  • I am having the same problem. I moved in a rented flat that has a water meter. When my first bill came it was for £165 for 4months. Now i do all the rite things, i.e not flashing the toilet unless i have to, never had a bath, showers last about 5mins. I dont understand how my bill can be this much. Its a one bed flat, i work fulltime, am only at home for a few hours a day. I wish i could rip the meter out, but i dont even know where it is.
  • water201, have you checked that they are billing you to actual readings. When you are not running water check the meter to make sure that the meter is not going round. If it is going round when everything is off there may be leak somewhere or the meter may be incorrectly connected to someone else's supply.
  • Lobster10, thanks for that. I am going to do that. If i can find the meter.

If you don't know where the water meter is then did you give the water company a meter reading when you moved in ? It might be that all you need to do is sort out the reading rather then a full scale leak panic (although good idea to check )
Sounds like they might have estimated your inital meter reading and that could explain the bill.

If you also have a combi boiler with a water meter, you can monitor how much water they waste.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

How big was the lid you removed with a screwdriver. One in our road had all the meters in one pit with a huge very heavy lid on it.

And to the guy who sarcastically talked about the main being down the road, when they built the street they could have fitted the meters where they wanted but they chose to put them all in a big pit together. Obviously cheap for them but not very handy for us.

    Erm, What?

The main has to run to the guys house anyway, to er, supply the water. Couldn't they have placed the meter where the main enters the property?

    Or is that too sensible.

As for the idea that it's like electric and gas, it isn't, as any doctor will tell you. Water is essential for life. Like air.
