Why should public sector be better off?

True, but she pays her wages just as much as anyone else. Chances are the people who say this probably don't pay tax anyway!
For those that are anti public sector, what do you suggest happens? Maybe in some forms of public sector or 'back in the old days' the pensions were awesome, but take it from someone who works for a local authority this just isn't the case anymore. In an ideal World private and public sector people should get exactly the same in every aspect but because of the different nature of the businesses this will never happen. Why should the private sector be any better off than the public anyway?
The public sector is necessary and the country would fall apart without it, I don't think anyone would deny this. So what exactly is everyones problem with the public sector?
I dont think anyone is saying we should have no public sector. That would be silly. What a lot of people are annoyed about are the nice pensions that are given out where in the private sector you would have to pay twice as much to get the same when you retire - based on people earning the same wage.
Most final salary schemes are now closed in the private sector yet you still get one in the public sector.one of the famous 50 -
In the good times, the private sector get all the perks and bonuses and look down on the public sector with their strict remuneration and hospitality rules. yet when things temproarily shift, the private sector go off on one, and want to see civil servants wearing rags and eating dry bread.I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0

Spot on, can you imagine the headlines if the NHS (or other public sector bodies) indulged in the same antics that private companies do/did....company funded christmas parties? company funded meals out? company funded christmas dinner? company funded bonuses? I have worked for the NHS for many years, never had so much as a christmas card! I do think you cant have it both ways you cant moan about our super pensions now that things have gone bad but deny us the benfits of working in the private sector....now if you could just point me in the direction of who I see about getting my productivity bonus and christmas bonus this year?0 -

Not every company pays a bonus. Not every company pays for the christmas party. Not every company pays for meals and so on and so forth.
Those that do are ones that have made profits so they reward their staff-that is their prerogative if they so wish.
No one forced you to work for the NHS that was your choice. I can see the arguement from both sides but your coming across quite bitter.one of the famous 50 -

But most final salary schemes are closed in the public sector, it's only employees retiring now who have such perks. I haven't been offered anything close to a final salary pension and neither has anyone else I know who works in the public sector. Maybe central Government would but I don't know anyone who works for them.
The days of final salary pensions are long gone for the majority of the public sector, yet the private sector employees still seem to take a dig at it. Why is this?0 -

Other than the Civil Service (which has a carear average scheme but with more generous accrual rates) which part of the public sector does not offer final salary schemes? or are you going down the route that as, eg, some are "average of last 3 years salary" they aren't, pedantically, "final salary" anymore?0 -

I work for local authority and we get the scheme where they add a percentage of what you add in which I believe is the standard pension offer in the private sector as well. I also know people who work for the NHS who are on similar schemes.
I would imagine that the civil service and central government still get great pension offers but the fact is they only make up a small percentage of public sector employees, most are no better off than private sector people.
Im actually job hunting for the private sector at the moment as the advantages of working there far outweigh the advantages of working in the public sector. My job is getting harder by the day and quite honestly I could do without the pressure anymore for no added benefit.0
