why are 17yr olds allowed to pass their driving tests when the car insurance that they need is just ridiculous??

They are only licensed to drive, nothing mentioned on their licence about owning or insuring a car/vehicle.;)

Owning / running a car isn't cheap, this may sound harsh, but if he cannot afford it, sorry, he will have to wait until he can.
  • I agree about the 1.4 Fiesta being a boy racer car. It's too fast for very inexperienced driver to handle and that is why the insurance is exhorbitant.
I had a 1.4S Fiesta as my fourth car and I had been driving for 13 years.
    I was a boy racer, that's why I bought it. :o

    Like others have said

A 1.4 Fiesta is too fast for a 17yr old lad just passing his test.

I hate to say it but a 1.0 litre Micra is going to be much beter for him. It's probably one of the cheapest cars to run and insure. It may destroy his street cred big time though but i'm sure the ability to be driving and save money will out weigh the image of driving a Micra

I can see both the annoyance & the reasoning - sorry to say it, but at 17 he's more likely to be involved in an accident than any other demographic on the roads, the high insurance should not come as a surprise to you and if it does, well, what rock you been living under? Pass Plus is a good idea, while it might not help immediately (at 17/18/19 you're not going to find reasonably priced insurance regardless) it will pay for itself - and well, £160-200 after the cost of lessons etc isn't THAT much!

The other way to beat it is if the law would change to "limit" young/inexperienced drivers to what vehicles in terms of power etc they could drive, but nooo, that would be against their "human rights" (as if charing 4-5 times the amount for insurance isn't!). Short of waiting til he's 25 to learn to drive etc it's not going to be cheap - better get him up the chimneys for christmas to pay for it :D

It happens for motorbikes. But then it feels as if there has been a systematic campaign to make the roads more dangerous for bikers, so they compensate by keeping under 21 year olds off them!

... the 1.4 Fiesta ... too fast for very inexperienced driver to handle
If you think a 1.4 Fiesta is too fast, then pretty much any car that can move under its own steam is in the same boat.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

I do sympathise, but I think there would be an outcry if passing the driving test was dependant on a means test.
  • My son has just got insurance from admiral for just under £800 for his 59 plate 1 litre astra, its on a 10 month accelerator.
Might be worth trying them, he did it over the phone as online was a lot more expensive. He is just 18.

A 1 litre Astra? They don't exist - perhaps you meant a Corsa?

I don't think you understand the context of my comment that it's too fast for a 17 year old who, by definition, is an inexperienced driver.

Doesn't he have a job? £4,000 isn't a lot of money for someone who, presumably, is living at home and working.
