Consensus here, I agree with every one else

If it's under three meters and you paid more than two quid you were conned !

The nice salespeople at PCWorld etc make nothing, not a penny if they sell you a £2000 quid tele, but they make all their commission out of the overpriced high margin rubbish stuff they con you into.

Apart from the nice salespeople at PCWorld are not on Commission and haven't been for quite some time.
The thing is, the margin on a £2000 telly is pretty damn small, pretty negligible...
When do they "Con" you into things? You do realize you don't have to take the cable right?

When I worked as a sales advisor, I hated it when customers would come in, want something and automatically expect money off. 99% of the time the amount they're asking for would make the sale cost the shop money, not make money, so you try and add an item on that they might need that would let you discount the television itself and you're conning them!

    I don't understand some people.

Edit: I would just like to state that, I don't agree with spending £75 on a cable, however, £15 isn't bad
  • If you can get an HDMI cable for 99p get it and see if you can tell the difference between that and a £15 one. Im guessing you wont be able to tell the difference and if you can you're 99p down.

Take it back and get your £15 back. You really shouldn't be spending any more than £5 on a cable.

The only thing thats really changed on the cable spec that affects the CABLE is the addition of ethernet as a small part of HDMI v1.4 (yes FOUR) and you can pretty much do all the rest of the 1.4 (ie 3D TV etc) stuff on any existing cable thats of sufficient quality to take the bandwidth (ie perhaps not the cheapest 99p ones but certainly the £3-£5 ones (that are £3-£5 ones from a reliable source and not 99p ones being sold for £5 on ebay).

I think they're now selling v1.4 ones as v1.4 without ethernet (ie all the old ones) and v1.4 with ethernet (actual new v1.4 ones you only need if you need the ethernet via HDMI connection)
  • I'm surprised you didn't get pushed some of these : http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/belkin-white-series-hdmi-1-4-cable-with-ethernet-2m-07656417-pdt.html?srcid=867&xtor=AL-89

    Hmm 99 quid cables.

    Having a bit of a read, there's quite a difference between 1.3 and 1.4 (http://www.techradar.com/news/television/hdtv/hdmi-1-4-10-things-you-need-to-know-626951)

If your TV isn't ultra-high resolution, or 3D, i doubt you need 1.4 cables. You might as well just get some of these: http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/5889232/HQ-HDMI-24k-Gold-Plated-v1-3b-1080p-Video-Cable-1-5m/Product.html?ptsl=1&ob=Price&fb=0&searchstring=HDMI+Cable&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&urlrefer=search

As long as it matches the spec of HDMI 1.3, there only difference between cables (that are not very long) will be the quality of the connectors.

I assume the people / person referenced is my good self. If you worked there and if knew your stuff [ product knowledge ] you would know that :

    - the price of a [ Currys/PC World ] HDMi cable was / is a rip-off
    - the pricing in general [ Currys/PC World ] across the board is a rip off
    - the staff training / product knowledge [ Currys/PC World ] is as poor as it can get
    - the repair costs / process / diagnostics [ Currys/PC World ] are somewhere between non existent and downright disingenuous
    - every repair, even a 50p CMOS battery replacement starts with the cost of a new motherboard

Now specific to HDMi cables my comments on pricing apply more or less across the board to include RicherSounds / Argos et al and not just Currys/PC World.

I recall somone at either currys or comet mentioning when HDMI was just starting to take off that they sold hdmi cables to customer at 90 quid which they had bought for a tenner!
There should be a law against that

    Mornin' RIK

    - that it should be illegal I agree with
    - I used the phrase ' downright disingenuous ' to avoid saying their diagnostics were bordering on criminal intent .. .. oooPs ! .. said it now !

There are many companies that impose a tax on stupidity - especially in the area of cables.
  • I assume the people / person referenced is my good self. If you worked there and if knew your stuff [ product knowledge ] you would know that :

Yes, There are a number of cables that ARE too expensive
    - the pricing in general [ Currys/PC World ] across the board is a rip off
No More expensive than any other shops offering the same products, hence the low margin on a lot of products
    - the staff training / product knowledge [ Currys/PC World ] is as poor as it can get
The training was brilliant, It's when people expect you to know everything about over 100k lines and you have to fall back to the ticket that people call it "poor"
    - the repair costs / process / diagnostics [ Currys/PC World ] are somewhere between non existent and downright disingenuous
Yes, some things are over priced (Data Transfer @ £30-) However, do you know how long it actually takes to do a full OS Install in a shop environment? Including all of the drivers? Making everything work as it should? It can take quite some time, hence the price is higher
    - every repair, even a 50p CMOS battery replacement starts with the cost of a new motherboard
No, a new CMOS Battery is what it costs, if you want us to fit it we need to be insured, we aren't insured if we don't charge, what if something was to happen that damaged the computer, where would we stand?

Now specific to HDMi cables my comments on pricing apply more or less across the board to include RicherSounds / Argos et al and not just Currys/PC World.

This is the thing, even small computer shops are charging very similar prices to Currys/PC World, they have to as there is very little money to be made otherwise.
