Am I entitled to a refund or store credit?

Yesterday I went to buy a router, and the assistant explained to me that the item I had brought to the checkout had been returned by another customer and she offered me 10% off. I thought thats not a bad deal but when I got home I found that a couple of components were missing. Surely someone should have checked that it was complete before being put back on the shelf.

When I went back to the store last night it was closed, and I really needed a working router so went to another store and got another one.

When I go to return the item with the missing components will they try to offer me store credit? Or am I entitled to my money back?

Thanks.

It depends on how it was described to you when you purchased it to get the 10% discount. If it was simply, customer return but otherwise complete then money back, the item is not as described.

I'd take your receipt from the other shop showing you'd had to buy another one due to the bits missing, and insist on a cash refund. I presume it wasn't sold as a return, rather than "parts missing"?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I am not sure if they are under an obligation to refund because it was explained that this was a returned item. What exactly was missing from the router?

  • Surely it still has to be 'fit for purpose' though, doesn't it?

Hence why I have asked what exactly was missing from the router. If for example it was just the instruction manual, this is different to an ethernet cable for example.

I'd say there's no difference, the item should be complete as new or the customer should be told that's why they are getting a discount.

Personally I would be very angry, obviously someone has already brought the item back and the store tried to re sell it.

Agreed, hence why I have asked the Op exactly what is 'missing'.

As the OP stated, it had been explained that the item had been returned hence the discount. It doesn't sound like they have passed this off to be new. (see what the OP has written in first post)

Sorry didn't write that very well, I meant that it could have been brought back as faulty and put back on the shelves.

    Perhaps, I think what the Op needs to tell us is;

    1. What was missing?
    2. Did the missing parts have a detriment to the perfomance of the product?
    3. Is the item faulty?

Once we have the information, it may be able to ascertain the OP's rights.

But they haven't passed this off as incomplete either (at least until the OP confirms) so again they should get a full refund due to it being not as described.
