I have just reinstalled XP on a Packard Bell imedia 5117se. I was given the basic machine without a hard drive but XP found all the drivers except the on board sound driver.
I have found the the drivers for the machine ftp://ftp.download.packardbell.com/DESKTOP/iMedia%20(2004-2005)/Driver/Xp/ but none of them seem to work. Could someone please tell me which driver is the correct one SoundMax, Realtek or is it another one on the list?
Could it be that the on board sound is broken and although Device Manager is showing that a driver is needed the real problem is somewhere else? I could get a sound card for a couple of quid but is there any way of finding out if the problem is the driver or the motherboard?

Use a prog such as SIW or PCWizard to id the sound device, even cpuz to id m/board but may be an oem.
Sometimes a cheap soundcard is the easiest option.0 -
Is there an option in the BIOS to enable/disable onboard sound?

Yes it is set to Auto. The only other option is Disabled.0 -
Run DXDiag sound tests and see what that shows.

Yes it only confirms that no sound card was found. Device Manager is telling me that the Multimedia Audio Controller needs a driver but I am not sure which one it needs.
I suppose it's easier to spend a couple of quid on a sound card but I am learning quite a few things here, thanks!0 -

Have you tried acl655_sis_va356.exe in that folder?0

It installed ok but there is still no sound. Maybe a stupid question but after you run the .exe file does the driver automatically find the onboard device? If you ask windows to find the driver from device manager it cannot find it. I assume it's looking for something else other than an .exe file.0
