What has my niece done?

My sister has been given a computer by a friend, she has been using it fine but today she has called me up to see what is wrong with it, my niece apparently pressed escape when it was loading up. nw when she loads i up there is just a blank screen!! What has she done and what can I do to rectify this?

Thank you

....also there is bt click installed and the person who gave the computer to my sister said it was a free internet service and all she needs to do is plug the internet in and it will be free? Is this true?

Need more information as I have never done this myself. What is the operating system?

This is what I've found about BT click:
BT Click provides dial up access to the Internet without the need for registration or payment of monthly internet account fees. Calls to BT Click are charged to the Customer's standard telephone bill on a per second basis, subject to a minimum call charge.

Be careful with a dial up connection to the internet. If a trojan or hacker gets in to your computer it can cost a fortune in phone bills for unknown calls. Run free programs such as adaware to check for intrusions.

  • Hitting escape while it was booting up won't do a thing - so the problem started somewhere else.

When you say a blank screen do you mean a black screen as in nothing loads, or it boots up (white writing appears and stuff happens) then it goes black. Or finally, does it boot up, but the background screen appears but nothing else (usually blue or greeny by default).

Hi, I have been over there today. I tried going into safe mode but the screen is just black, I got a message click up saying chkdisk or something like that ...it said something was corrupt. I have the same computer so is there anything I can do to help! and how would it have got into this state?

    Hi

I would forget the guess work and take the PC to somebody who does repairs. It does not cost as much as you may think, recently spent £25 to get mine sorted and it is running better than it has done for a good while.

Also, it is not the best idea to download free programs to check for spyware, adware etc as this itself my be some form of adware.

PC's running windows operating systems easily get into the state where they need to do chkdisk.

If you take the computer to be repaired don't take it to a chain like PCWorld as they are expensive (£50+) take it to your local person round the corner it will be at least half the price. A friend of mine got charged £60 for a well know n chain to look at his PC to find out what was wrong with it and they were going to charge him another £90 to change some components. He then went to a local shop and got charged £25 to find out what was wrong with it and to fix it.

Also if you have a teenager you are better of getting a monthly package for about £10 or broadband because she will run up large bills using the internet.

If you have anything extra plugged in, printers, CDs, remove it,

If you get into safe mode (F8 at boot), then you'll need to boot from an XP CD, go into recovery console, and do start, run, cmd, chkdsk c: /F/R

    and reboot.

If that doesn't work , try an XP repair install.

or you could attach the hard disk to your PC as a slave and run chkdsk on it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
