As far as I know, you can't without a police warrant - the IP address will be registered to the ISP, and only they will know which user is using which IP address.0 -
Exactly, and and as soon as I have the ip address, I can do a look up on the internet which will tell me who the ISP is, and I can pass the information onto the police who can trace it.....To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0

Don't put too much faith in this, depending where you look, I am in either Middlesbrough or Central London.

That's probably the location of your ISP's servers. Assuming your ISP has kept the data, they should be able to identify the person to whom an IP address is registered at any given time.0 -

Is there any way I can stop the laptop from syncing, I have all my bank details on there.....
Google Sync has nothing to do with your banking details being stored - it only syncs bookmarks, add-ons and themes. However your browser does store form filling info if you're daft enough to have that enabled for a banking site. As for tracing by IP address, assuming the hdd wasn't been wiped already, it will take too long and unless plod catch the guy with the laptop (very unlikely) he can claim ignorance because an ip address doesn't tell you who was using the computer.
As for being insensitive, jaylu, what has your luvvy wuvvy post had to offer? Absolutely nothing of any consequential use whatseover so its about as useful as a chocolate fireguard and a complete waste of time which is why I don't bother doing that. 99.9% of stolen laptops are never seen again by the owner. That is the reality of it. Those that are recovered are usually done by chance and only really stand a chance of being re-united with the owner if they've stored details such as the serial number on sites such as Immobilise.com.0 -

True, but I'm shown in both places at the same time, depending which site you use.
I was meaning that just looking up the address and calling the police is no good, you need to go through the isp.I can do a look up on the internet which will tell me who the ISP is, and I can pass the information onto the police who can trace it.....Move along, nothing to see.0
