sounds like you've landed on your feet Cheery despite the trials and tribulations you've had to get there. I'm sure you'll have a fab break when you finally land chez Pippi.

Cheery you are having such an adventure :rotfl: We should have sponsored the trip with a sweepstake on either how many changes of plans or how many different forms of transport you could use :D

Glad you are still being generally Cheery, not sure I would have been at this stage :rotfl:

    Hostel sounds absolutely fab :T

Good luck tomorrow  Can't wait to hear that you have got there safe and you and Pippi like each other (foregone conclusion me thinks :D)

Got to Lairg at 4 - surprise, surprise, no replacement bus... :rotfl: Poor train conductor! Did lots of ringing around, apparently 'someone' had 'forgotten' to order a bus  They were ordered to take us all the way back to Inverness (!) so we could get on the next train to Lairg, where we cold transfer to - yep, that's right - a replacement bus :rotfl:

Conductor (rightly!) told them this was nonsense, and refused to do any such thing :D Also refused to turf us off the train until we had somewhere to go, so we all just sat there - along with the people who'd got ON the train trying to go back to Inverness, and waited the promised 30 mins for the bus.

Thank God, there is someone, somewhere with common sense. This snow has brought to light the vast reservoir of ineptitude in this country.

I've been trying to arrange a delivery, bloke finally emails me complaining that he rings and there's nobody there.
"Did you ring the delivery address?"
    "Er, no."
"Try ringing the delivery address. You've just found out why there *is* a delivery address."

  • I can imagine the final leg of Cheery's journey with her travelling on the back of a Highland cow :rotfl:

But she will make it I am sure and it has been so much more exciting than if it had just been a boring, straight forward journey. This type of adventure makes for the best holidays :T

Have fun once you are there cheery!

    That would have been great!

Isn't she just - I'd be cheery looking back on it after a couple of months, but the same day? Nope, I'd be miserable

I like the sound of decadent hostels :D

Good luck tomorrow  Can't wait to hear that you have got there safe and you and Pippi like each other (foregone conclusion me thinks :D)

    Of course
    Aww, you're so lovely :D

I'm glad you're all having a good laugh at my travelling palavers :rotfl: I am too (now!). Shall i give you a mini update?!

I think you've done brilliantly! Its just that when you write in such a cheery way, its hard to remember that you were probably cold, maybe worried about where you'd spend the night, and maybe even a bit hungry - or even needing the loo and not able to get to one

That conductor sounds an absolute pearl!

    ....

Eventually got to Thurso about half 7 (ferry left at 7), and now nicely ensconced in hostel above chip shop :D Toasty warm, free internet, and I've just eaten the most decadent meal I've ever had in a hostel in my life (baked potato, goats cheese, and jamie oliver rosemary pesto :rotfl:)

cup of tea on the go, film on the tv, and we're planning on catching the ferry at 8.45 tomorrow morning

    Wish us luck! :D:D

The very best of luck and positive vibes, Cheery - lovely meal, and a great place for a hostel, right above a chippie :D

  • MrEH and I have just been :rotfl: at your trials and tribulations Daffs - it is SO reminiscent of some of the trips we've had! Glad to hear you're snug and warm now, and hurrah for the train conductor refusing to leave you all standing in the snow. The "on the ground" staff on Scotrail are, in our experience, usually very good, even if the office bods can sometimes leave a little to be desired! Fingers crossed for the ferry to go OK in the morning....as we would have said in the "good old days" of free bingo - glglglglgl! :D

Gosh, Cheery, how exciting. i hope this works out tomorrow, at least you are nearly there!!

Hope you and pippi have a fab time.

Also, Pippi hope your children get off safely and well to their fathers.

Although there does seem to be a lot of problems with the flights. One friend is supposed to be going to cape Cod to see her sister and was supposed to fly on Saturday and is hoping to fly tomorrow via a very circuitous route. I feel so sorry for everyone trying to travel right now!
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

Gosh, what a cheery adventure to stripeyland :rotfl:. Hope it all goes smoother from now on in (em, especially the ferry crossing :D)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
