APCOA parking ticket

Hello All,
I drive to my local station every morning to get the train to work. I park in the station car park and pay for the ticket via an automated system over the phone. We have two cars and I don't always take the same car.
One day I came back in the evening to find I had a parking ticket because I'd accidentally bought the ticket over the phone for the other car. An honest mistake so I wrote to APCOA (who manage the car park) to explain. They still want a 50 quid fine. However, googling car park tickets on the internet it appears a lot of people have been successful in not paying tickets where there's a dispute as the company are reluctant to chase them through the courts. I'm inclined to refuse to pay and see what happens.Would their argument that it's my responsibility to purchase a ticket for the correct vehicle stand up in court?
They already know it's my car and I'd parked it there as I wrote to them explaining the situation.
Any advice gratefully received.

How do they threanten retribution? Do they say they will send round the debt collectors or take you to magistrate court? If the DC then forget them. If maggies then come back for help.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

They simply say "failure to make the 50 quid payment will result in additional costs being incurred."
I'm more than happy to refuse to pay as I strongly believe it's a simple mistake and I have actually paid.0 -
No mention of railway bylaw 14 so its safe to ignore.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

You misunderstand I think, you don't have to 'refuse to pay' as you don't owe anything enforceable. This is NOTHING, the ticket is a piece of rubbish. Only ever take seriously a parking fine from the Police or the Council.
You just ignore them - it's really simple. Ignore the debt collector letters and that will be that, end of scam. Been there, done that, got the letters to show for it. Read the forum threads, click the links on the sticky threads at the top, you'll soon understand all about the scam and that it's safe to ignore it:

HTH, happy reading, don't miss the Watchdog link and the pictures of the threatogram letter-chain.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
